Latter Day Light DAILY DEVOTIONAL September 6, 2017 Tithing |
SCRIPTURE OF THE DAY Malachi 3:10 "Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it. " |
QUOTE OF THE DAY Spencer W. Kimball "The Lord herein makes clear that tithing is his law and is required of all his followers. It is our honor and privilege, our safety and promise, our great blessing to live this law of God. To fail to meet this obligation in full is to deny ourselves the promises and is to omit a weighty matter. It is a transgression, not an inconsequential oversight" ("He Did It with All His Heart, and Prospered," Ensign, March 1981). |

TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY September 6 1838 - The Prophet Joseph Smith left early to attend his trial in Daviess county to be held at the Littlefield home instead of the county seat due to threats. The trial did not proceed as the plaintiff did not show up. The trial was reset for the next day at the Raglin home, a known member of the mob, six to eight miles further south. The Prophet then returned to Far West. (History of the Church, 3:72) Also, the Kirtland Camp traveled within three miles east of Terre Haute, Indiana. The group of poor Saints is making good progress towards their new home in Missouri. 1842 - The Prophet Joseph Smith writes a second letter with further instructions regarding baptism for the dead. This letter is recorded in Doctrine and Covenants 128. (History of the Church, 5:148-153) 1857 - Thomas B. Marsh, former president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles who had left the Church during the Missouri period, comes to Utah and speaks to a group of Saints shortly after his return to the Church, apologizing for his previous behavior and asking for the Saints' fellowship. 1888 - Edward Stevenson, Joseph S. Black, and Andrew Jenson, leave Salt Lake City to visit various Church history sites in the Eastern states. This was one of the first Church-sponsored attempts to collect historical information about the Church. 1954 - Elder Harold B. Lee travels to war torn Korea and speaks at a servicemen's conference. 1965 - The United States government designates Nauvoo, Illinois, as a National Historical Landmark. 1980 - Missionaries enter the African nation of Kenya for the first time. |
