TODAY IN CHURCH HISTORY September 9
1838 - An additional group of men headed for Adam-ondi-Ahman to help protect the town from the mob. Two men transporting a wagon loaded with guns from Richmond to supply the mobs in Daviess County, were arrested by Captain Allred and taken to Far West and held for abetting the mob. The mob continued to report they had kidnaped members of the Church to try and get the Church to commit the first act of violence in the growing tensions between the Mormons and their non-Mormon neighbors. (History of the Church, 3:74-75)
1839 - The Prophet Joseph records that during the week he spent his time visiting the sick and attending to the settlement of the new town of Nauvoo, Illinois. (History of the Church, 4:7)
1850 - Congress approves an act creating the territory of Utah.
1858 - The Bank of Deseret issues the first engraved Deseret Currency Association notes. The notes are printed and issued in Salt Lake City, Utah, in denominations of $1, $2, and $3 and are backed by livestock.
1924 - Elder Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, is born in Salt Lake City, Utah.
1978 - A new missionary training program is announced for the new Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah. It requires English-speaking missionaries to receive four weeks of training and missionaries learning other languages to receive the standard eight weeks of training.
1988 - Bobette Kay Wildcat, a Shoshone and Church member, is crowned as Miss Indian America during a competition held in Bismarck, North Dakota.
1993 - Cameroon officially recognizes the Church.
