With its well-developed economy and affluent population, Japan is often celebrated for its livability and cultural influence. Japan ranks fifth on the Global Competitiveness Report and first in the Economic Complexity Index by the World Economic Forum. It is the fourth-largest consumer market, according to World Bank data.
Its legal market continues to develop and evolve today. With 41,050 member attorneys as of 2019, according to the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, the country’s legal market is fiercely competitive and highly skilled. Large Japanese law firms are ambitious, pushing into new markets overseas and winning international work along the way.
Domestically, the country is opening up to foreign lawyers — in May 2020 Japan's parliament passed a bill to amend the Act on Special Measures concerning the Handling of Legal Services by Foreign Lawyers (the Foreign Lawyers Act), which covers the provision of legal services by foreign lawyers in the country. It has also made its arbitration ambitions known.
To better serve this vibrant market, ALB is launching a new bilingual (English/Japanese) e-magazine, which focus on the stories and developments affecting the country’s in-house counsel.
Each issue will explore a different theme. In the inaugural issue in June we will examine Japanese investment in China, unpacking the specific pitfalls and regulatory challenges that in-house counsels are tasked with tackling. In August we will take a look at Southeast Asia, providing a briefing on relevant developments in the region. October will focus on the attraction of the India market, while in the December issue, we will look to the Middle East.
The ALB Japan e-magazine will also feature contributions from legal experts both inside and outside Japan, where we will be inviting analysis on critical developments and trends across the region that are impacting Japanese in-house counsel.
