Vos hert zikh?

That's Yiddish for "hey, what's happening." I learned the phrase this week from our latest innovation, a "Yiddish Word of the Day" video series featuring our own Rukhl Schaechter, editor of the Yiddish Forward. When I first took over as editor-in-chief in September, I thought it'd be cool to spend a week this summer at one of those immersion Yiddish camps, but looks like that won't be happening. But our new normal is a perfect time to pick up a few phrases, and Rukhl is choosing them wisely -- day two included "a glazele shnaps."

The Yiddish series is one of several ways we're connecting with readers on other platforms. Our new national editor, Rob Eshman, is launching a #quarantineshabbat cooking show on Facebook Live. Tune in at 3 p.m. ET today to see him make paella with chicken and artichokes -- on the grill in his Venice, Calif., backyard.

We also had more than 2,000 people join a fascinating conversation last week on the Netflix hit show "Unorthodox" with one of its co-creators and several people who, like Esty, left the Hasidic community and talked, among other things, about what happens in Hasidic bedrooms. You can watch the video of it here, and stay tuned because we'll soon be publishing some more of the questions viewers posed and the panelists answered.

It was a super-newsy week, and I hosted an impromptu Facebook Live discussion among our journalists about New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's actions around the large Brooklyn funeral for a Satmar rabbi -- that video is here. This week's PDF, which you can download and print via the button above, includes our exclusive stories about the NYPD's involvement in that funeral; De Blasio's relationship with Orthodox communities; and Batya Ungar-Sargon's condemnation of his behavior -- and the mainstream media's -- in stoking stereotyping of Hasidim during this pandemic.

We've also got a tear-jerker interview with the URJ official who canceled camp; Rob's brilliant Ten Commandments of Zoom; an investigation of whether Doron of Fauda is hot or not; and Joel Kotkin's analysis of the future of retail. You can read them in the PDF, or click on any of the links in this email, and can always let me know what you think by writing rudoren@forward.com.

Speaking of what you think -- we're eager to hear how people are absorbing the reality of a summer without camp, and what that might mean for the Jewish world. Please fill out and share our questionnaires -- this one for kids, and this one for parents.

Gut Shabbes (I knew that phrase already of course, but Rukhl has a whole slew of greetings and responses on this video!),
Jodi
