There are some excellent learning opportunities in Ghost Bites this morning for those who are interested in corporate finance (the dark arts of mergers and acquisitions, capital raisings and listings): BHP Group made an opportunistic play for copper group OZ Minerals Limited (ASX: OZL), after OZL's share price fell sharply on concerns of a recession. The board said no, which means BHP either needs to hike the proposed offer price or go hostile with an offer directly to shareholders. The partial offer by New Veld LLC for Alexander Forbes has been a great success, with the investor taking its stake from 14.83% (as acquired from Mercer Africa) to the maximum desired holding of 33% . This was made possible through the "excess tenders" mechanism, a useful tool in partial offers. In addition to details on these stories, Ghost Bites includes insights on Datatec's latest acquisition, Sun International's property deal, Mpact's interim results, a trading statement from OneLogix and several other updates. Today's important data release is the CPI numbers out of the US, which the market will watch closely. This could have a significant impact on the rand and commodities, which also had a strong day on Monday. Brent Crude has fallen slightly and is trading below $96 per barrel. As a reminder of how incredible the volatility has been in Brent Crude, the 52-week range is $64.90 - $139.13. This has been a wild time in the market.
