The Front Page: A family grieves, a casino moves and the parades begin

By Drew Broach | Deputy metro editor

THE YOUNG AND THE OLD: Relatives of a 12-year-old boy who was shot and left to die on an isolated street in New Orleans East say their family has been left broken in the wake of his loss. "He was just a child," Derrick Cash's aunt said. "They left him out there with no regard to anything."

Meanwhile, an 80-year-old man was jailed Wednesday on a charge of helping beat another man to death in the Leonida neighborhood, before he fled in a van driven by his granddaughter.

GOING ASHORE: The Treasure Chest casino, docked on Lake Pontchartrain in Kenner since shortly after it opened in 1994, is moving onto land as part of a $90 million expansion. A new casino will be built where the Treasure Chest's parking lot is now, and will include new restaurants and a sports book.

COVID CARNIVAL: Damn the coronavirus, it's full parade ahead! The 2022 Mardi Gras season starts Thursday, and we have the rundown on the first two marching parades, as well as six processions to come in February.

Welcome to Carnival! Catch the latest news all day on NOLA.com.

COVID CARNIVAL

Mardi Gras 2022 begins with fabulous foot parades: Chewbacchus, Krewe du Vieux, ‘tit Rex

Weeks before the big float parades stampede through the streets, smaller do-it-yourself foot processions gallivant between the curbs. These swarms of feminist Francophiles, nerdy science fiction devotees, absinthe fairy followers, ribald jokesters and other quirky Carnival cabals provide some of the season’s sweetest experiences. Sure, back when you were a kid, your parents told you where king cake babies come from. Later you learned that the length of parades is measured in beers, and that you’re not supposed to call it "Mardi Gras" until Mardi Gras day, and that you're not supposed to call it "Mardi Gras day." Read more
