Good morning Valued Subscriber,
It was a phrase that would have sent shudders down many a long-term Canberran's spine: "It will be like the Howard government". Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has long been asked for details on his plan to cut new 41,000 "Canberra-based" positions if he wins the election, given most of the new positions were actually created outside the ACT. Lanie Tindale writes that he has likened his plans to 1996, when the ACT went into a recession. Many Canberrans were disappointed at the lack of funding in the recent federal budget for the city, but it seems there was a bit more in there than we realised. Labor is offering up some of the infrastructure money the territory government asked for. Dana Daniel reports. After enjoying longer days during summer, Canberrans will receive the minor luxury of an extra hour of sleep with the end of daylight saving time earlier this morning. Set your clock back an hour if you haven't already, as we welcome brighter mornings but darker evenings.
We're in for a partly cloudy day today, with the chance of a frost in the early morning before an expected top of 21 degrees. David McLennan, digital editor |
