By KELLY P. KISSEL | Metro editor After a set of high-profile problems among children needing state services, Louisiana caseworkers will now step in quicker when children under 3 are hospitalized with abuse or neglect concerns. The move comes after a Baton Rouge mother was accused in a case that involved a toddler ingesting fentanyl and later dying. Classes resumed in East Baton Rouge Parish and some surrounding school districts Monday, and Ascension, Livingston and others will restart later today. These are the first classes for many since the horrible shooting at a Texas school in May, and school officials here have reassessed their safety protocols. And East Baton Rouge may soon target people who simply turn out to watch drag racers and stunt drivers. The Metro Council meets Wednesday, and they intend to toughen penalties against drivers and also cite spectators. |
