9 Michigan state parks where fall color seems to last forever

Michigan’s coastal state parks in the Lower Peninsula are great places to visit for continued fall color when trees in the state’s interior forests are showing signs of being at or past peak. That’s because Lake Michigan and Lake Huron act like insulators, holding onto their summertime warmth well into the fall, which in turn slows the color changes along their coastlines.

One of the year’s prettiest meteor showers hits its peak this week, giving skywatchers a greater chance of witnessing shooting stars and possibly even fireballs. The best viewing will likely be during the pre-dawn hours of Sunday, Oct. 22, though the morning of Saturday, Oct. 21 might offer good chances.
