On this day in 1939 Prime Minister Robert Menzies announced a new department in the cabinet of 16 ministers. A story on the front page of The Canberra Times stated Mr Menzies proposed the creation of a new department of supply and development. "Mr. Menzies said that he had felt for some time that the enormous task of organising for the defence of Australia was far too much for one Minister, and that in consequence he felt that the problems of economic preparedness and industrial organisation should be made the special responsibility of a special Minister," the story read.
