Smart speakers are in a relatively early cycle of adoption in most markets around the world. Many are still adjusting to the notion of having a speaker in their house that is always listening and ready to respond when called upon. However, low competitive pricing on the devices is encouraging fast uptake in key markets.

The US and UK are nearly through their early adoption stage, with over one-fifth of internet users regularly using the devices in 2019. Although the Amazon Echo launched two years earlier in the US, smart speaker adoption in the UK quickly caught up due to steep discounts on the Amazon Echo and the October 2017 launch of Google’s Home Mini at an affordable price. Thus far, the Amazon Echo is the leading smart speaker in the US (16.4% of internet users) and the UK (14.3%).
  • The success of smart speakers in the UK and US is partly due to Amazon and Google devices’ voice recognition of the English language. In Canada, where roughly one-third of the population speaks French, penetration has been slightly held back (18.2% of internet users) by late support for the language and accent.
  • China’s many complex languages and dialects hampered the launch of smart speakers there. JD.com’s DingDong was the first smart speaker to launch in 2016, and stumbled due to underdeveloped speech recognition technology and a high price tag.
