What can higher education do about climate change? Plenty, according to a new report from the Aspen Institute.

 

While the higher education sector is uniquely positioned to both educate new generations and build on expand existing knowledge about climate science, it’s also emerging as a model for making an industry’s physical operations more environmentally sustainable, the report says.

How 2U’s Bankruptcy Shed Light on the Company and OPM Market

During its Chapter 11 bankruptcy process, 2U plans to cut its liabilities and get healthier, while continuing to run programs without interruption and making good on its financial obligations to university clients.

 

While restructuring could help reboot the financially struggling company, critics see a warning in 2U’s bankruptcy. Several advocates have since called for more regulatory oversight of the online program management market and protections for students in OPM offerings should a company go dark entirely someday.

Community Colleges Unite to Scale AI Workforce Education

In recent years, community and technical colleges have emerged as an underappreciated destination for AI education, stepping up to meet employer needs.

 

However, community colleges often face underinvestment compared to their university counterparts, and many need to build their capacity to teach effectively in emerging technology fields, which are subject to more uncertainty than established occupations. A national consortium formed by and for community colleges is set to meet that need for the AI workforce.

Bloomberg Gives Record $600 Million to HBCU Medical Schools

Bloomberg Philanthropies announced a $600 million gift to four historically Black medical schools this week, a landmark gift that will more than double three of the four schools’ endowments in a strong endorsement of their mission.

 

The announcement is the latest in a series of major gifts to HBCUs after many years of financial struggles, offering a dramatic escalation of their potential aspirations and impact.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, a former high school teacher, coach, and veteran, will join Kamala Harris as her vice presidential running mate for the November election.

 

Walz is a big proponent of education. As governor, he took advantage of a Democratic trifecta in state government to push through a progressive policy agenda that included free breakfast and lunch for all schoolchildren and free college tuition for Minnesota families earning less than $80,000 a year.
