In Welker's hands, each painting shelters stories that are waiting to unfold. Blending the familiar with the unexpected, she leads the viewer on a seductive path of discovery. Raised and educated in Ohio, Welker earned a BFA and MA at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, and Art. After moving to Southern California, she followed a career path sharing her innovative art knowledge in areas of public education. Today, Welker continues to be driven by the need to innovate. Without a preconceived notion of how a painting will look, imagery gradually emerges. Her paintings are intuitive, looking beyond the surface, reaching deeper, and exploring the effects of erosion, sedimentation, and the passing of time. Welker says, "I want viewers to get comfortable with being uncomfortable as they encounter a new way of seeing into the hidden depths of nature." When looking at Welker's work, you quickly notice an emphasis on geometric shapes. These angular configurations help to establish diagonal movement that incidentally define buildings situated around hillsides and rocks. Equally important are the organic areas within the same painting. Combining hard edge geometric form with the softness of natural surroundings is essential to establish contrast within each work. Blending the familiar with the unexpected, Welker shifts importance, if only briefly, from a world of technology to one that reconnects people to the richness of the land.
