Believe it or not, many people do it each year by crossing the English Channel between the UK and France. The 33-mile long route is fraught with waves and occasional bad weather, but that wasn’t enough to scare away 16-year-old Vera Rivard of New Hampshire. With the help of her parents (who paid for the trip), she jumped into the water on the British side and swam for nearly 14 hours before reaching the French border.
