Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Rachel Maddow

Rachel Maddow has made the top spot again for killer ratings, helping boost MSNBC to the most-watched cable news network in prime time Monday, while consistent demo viewership helped CNN capture the highest number of viewers in the key A25-54 demographic.

The Rachel Maddow Show — which broke some exclusive reporting from NBC News about developments in the Rudy Giuliani investigation — was the most-watched show in all of cable news, with 3.38 million total viewers and 529,000 in the demo. Tucker Carlson Tonight had the second-most total viewers, 2.93 million, and 371,000 in the demo. Fox’s The Five had the third-most viewers of the day, with nearly 2.6 million total viewers and 322,000 in the demo. Hannity — which was guest hosted by Jason Chaffetz –was fourth, with 2.34 million total viewers and 302,000 in the demo. The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell had the fifth most-watched show of the day, with 2.32 million viewers and 294,000 in the demo.

In prime time, MSNBC averaged 2.63 million total viewers, and 381,000 in the demo. Fox News had the second-most viewers overall, 2.36 million, but had the fewest in the demo, with 315,000. CNN had the fewest total viewers, 1.74 million, but won the demo, with 406,000 younger viewers.

MEDIA LOSER:
Kennedy

During an Outnumbered segment on media hostility, Fox News host Kennedy lobbed very personal schoolyard taunts at CNN’s Brian Stelter on Tuesday. The irony was not intentional.

On Tuesday, the Fox talk show held a segment on personal attacks the media aims at conservatives. The grievances included a Washington Post cartoon that depicted President Donald Trump’s backers in his attempt to overturn the election as rats. The segment also took issue with Stelter’s Reliable Sources monologue arguing that right wing media is furthering “radicalization” of the country.

Lawrence Jones called the commentary “disgusting”, and Emily Compagno argued that Joe Biden’s calls for national reconciliation are hollow. Kennedy added that free speech must be protected no matter how “abhorrent, simplistic, overly busy, unreadable,” or “unpopular” it might be, and then she ripped into Stelter, supposedly quoting conservative commentator Stephen Miller. (Who pointed out on Twitter that he doesn't actually say what Kennedy attributed to him about Stelter.)

"I’m going to steal a line from Stephen Miller: Taters gonna tater." said Kennedy. "He might be the most unsophisticated analyst in the history of media analysis. He’s not just ham-fisted, he’s ham-headed."

Ignoring the beam in one's own eye is intrinsic to the personal insult game. It's what you might call "not a good look."

The A-Block

PUNK'D

Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo interviewed an animal rights activist posing as the CEO of food processing company Smithfield for an entire segment on Wednesday morning.

It's really incredible.

Trump + Pelosi + AOC

On Tuesday evening, President Donald Trump posted a video to his Twitter feed that derided the bipartisan approved bill. While he didn’t pledge to veto, he announced that the would not sign the bill in its current state and instead is sending it back asking for it to include $2000 direct payment to each citizen and $4000 per couple. And a funny thing happened since that video posted: he found immediate support from the Democrats. Loud and public support.

Not so much from certain other quarters, though.

Also, Speaker Nancy Pelosi's letter to Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy on the subject is a must-read.

Trump vs GOP

And while he's busy with peace and goodwill with Democrats, Trump is fostering discontent and war within the GOP. Even the threat of being "primaried" is already back in play..

Christie vs Trump

On Fox News, former New Jersey governor Chris Christie continued to smack at Trump over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Wallace vs Christie

On MSNBC, Nicolle Wallace asked Christie if this was just a disingenuous attempt to "clean the Trump stink" off himself before 2024.

But stink wasn't always repellent, apparently, as Wallace once said women find Christie "wildly attractive."

Vaccine for Every American

Pfizer and its partner BioNTech have reached an agreement with the federal government to deliver an additional 100 million doses of their Covid-19 by June, Pfizer said Wednesday.

The purchase will provide enough supply “to vaccinate every American who wants it by June 2021,” Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement included in Pfizer’s announcement.

The feds previously had an agreement for 100 million doses from Pfizer. The latest order brings the total number to 200 million, which will be enough for 100 million Americans to receive the two-dose vaccine.

Must See Clip

‘They Did Not Give Two Sh*ts

Former state representative and retired Army Major Richard Ojeda (D) blasted President Donald Trump for his pardon of four contractors with the private military firm, Blackwater, in a video he shared on social media that went viral this week.

“Those guys would drive through frigging areas and just frigging randomly shoot at people,” says Ojeda in the dramatic video. “They would cause so much trouble for other active-duty units coming through areas. We would end up finding ourselves going through an area that had become a hornet’s nest because previously, they drove through there shooting shit up
They did not give two sh*ts.”

A grim but important perspective.
