MEDIA LOSER:
Andrew Cuomo

Disgraced former Governor Andrew Cuomo was ordered on Tuesday to return $5.1 million in profits from a book deal that the state ethics board ruled is in violation of state ethics laws.

The Joint Commission on Public Ethics gave Cuomo thirty days to forfeit the income one month after the same watchdog panel voted to revoke its prior ruling allowing Cuomo to earn outside income from his book titled American Crisis: Leadership Lessons From the Covid-19 Pandemic.

The panel concluded that Cuomo violated stipulations barring him from using state resources, including government-paid staffers, in the drafting of the book.

The New York Assembly released a report in late November detailing how Cuomo “used state resources” and staff to “write, publish and promote” the book.

Ex-CNN anchor Chris Cuomo lost his book deal recently, too.

The report also detailed how the book was being used to spin unfavorable coverage surrounding the then-governor and his policies regarding Covid-19 and nursing homes. The report added, “we are mindful of ongoing law enforcement issues regarding these issues.”

“The investigation showed that as they were considering these matters, the book deal was going on, there’s a chapter in the book about nursing homes. They were trying to make it as what they thought was least damaging to the governor instead of just telling the truth,” Assembly Member Phil Steck, a Democrat, told the AP at the time.

Both the former governor and his brother the former journalist were lampooned by Saturday Night Live last week.

As media figures, the pair are obviously having a bad month, and judging by the book problems, that may be a continuing trend in months ahead.

The A-Block

Omicron

CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta said Wednesday he believed Covid-19’s Omicron variant “seemed to be” a less severe form of the virus than its predecessors.

In a segment with the network’s Jim Sciutto and Erica Hill, Gupta said it “had become clear” that Omicron was more transmissible, noting that while the Delta variant of the virus “seemed to be doubling every couple of weeks,” Omicron appeared to be “doubling every couple of days.”

“I think it’s early to tell, but when we look at the South African data, because that’s where you had a lot of the initial data, it does seem to be less severe. … You kind of look at the number of cases overall, and you say, ‘What is the percentage of those people that are developing severe illness?’ In the early days of the pandemic we could say, based on this number of infections, we can anticipate this number of hospitalizations a few weeks later."

"That percentage, that proportion seems to be lower," said Dr. Gupta.

Fox News medical contributor Dr. Nicole Saphier went further when she put forth the argument it's time to do away with mask and vaccine mandates, even suggesting the U.S. "allow this mild infection to circulate so we can continue to build that hybrid immunity."

Outkick's Clay Travis went even one step further than that, suggesting the NHL, NFL, and NBA allow players who have Covid but are asymptomatic continue to play.

Western Kentucky Toy Drive

Kentucky First Lady Britainy Beshear announced Tuesday she has organized a toy drive to collect items for children affected by this past weekend’s devastating and deadly tornadoes.

Beshear joined CNN Newsroom where she explained to co-host Victor Blackwell that while lives were devastated and lost, there is still a need to ensure that children in the impacted areas are not left without Christmas gifts.

Beshear said, “Tragedy doesn’t begin to describe the absolute obliteration of towns and communities in Western Kentucky. People are grieving, they are shellshocked, they are looking for pieces of their life in rubble that’s just not there. There’s a lot of sadness, but Kentuckians are strong and resilient and we will bounce back from this.”
