Staff at Maine’s Department of Environmental Protection released a draft permit for Central Maine Power’s controversial power line through western Maine on Friday afternoon. Ski season is coming to what may be a premature end in Maine this year. Internet, wireless, cable, water and other companies say they are suspending shutoffs for nonpayment during the coronavirus outbreak, with some adding extra services to help Mainers get by. Central Maine Healthcare officials said Saturday that the three-hospital system is postponing some elective surgeries and limiting access to buildings starting on March 16. Here’s a roundup of the latest COVID-19 news in Maine and New England. A natural foods co-op in Blue Hill is booming. A restaurant in Millinocket and a bakery in Belfast are closing temporarily. A family supermarket in Ellsworth has lost business. Ski operations and lessons at Sugarloaf remain open, but the resort is taking measures to keep the lodge especially clean and reduce large gatherings. A Franklin County resident allied with Central Maine Power asked a Maine court on Friday to overturn a decision by Secretary of State Matt Dunlap to green-light a question for the November ballot to kill the utility’s $1 billion hydropower corridor proposal. Now with the first cases of novel coronavirus confirmed in the state, the Maine Federation of Farmers’ Markets wants market customers and the public to know they are taking immediate and proactive steps to ensure markets are safe places to shop during the pandemic. Consumers may face empty store shelves when trying to buy toilet paper, hand sanitizer and other cleaning supplies recommended by health officials, but retail industry experts said the situation should be temporary. Some of the canceled events at the venue are The America East Championship Game Viewing Party, The Harlem Globetrotters, Gabriel Iglesias and Baby Shark Live.
