On this day in 1966, the big story on the front page of The Canberra Times was $23,000 in traveller's cheques and $800 in cash vanishing from the English, Scottish and Australian bank in Hobart Place.  Accounting for inflation, this was equivalent to $307,000. The discrepancy was noticed when a man attempted to cash 30 of the cheques at a Brisbane bank.
