TOP OF THE AGENDA | Israel and Hezbollah exchange heavy fire | | Border towns in Israel and Lebanon have sustained damage from the strikes on Sunday. Credit: AFP | Israel has said it destroyed thousands of Hezbollah rocket launchers in its biggest attack on the Lebanon-based group since their 2006 full-scale war. The action, early on Sunday, was designed to thwart a large-scale attack by the Iran-backed group, Israel said. But Hezbollah said it had still fired 320 rockets and drones at Israel. This weekend's events represent a major escalation of the continuous, lower-intensity conflict across the Israel-Lebanon border triggered by the onset of war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas last October. On Sunday, Israeli Defense Forces announced a Navy soldier had fallen "during combat in northern Israel", while Hezbollah confirmed the deaths of two fighters. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said it was hoped the latest fighting would not lead to a regional war. The US believes a ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas is likely to defuse tensions - but there was no breakthrough at the latest round of peace talks.
Analysis: Hezbollah said its action was a response to the Israeli killing of a senior commander in Beirut in July. But while both sides say they don't want war, they are both ready for it, writes Jon Donnison.

| Children bear brunt of mpox outbreak | About 75% of the mpox cases being seen by medics in the eastern Congolese city of Goma are under the age of 10, a doctor has told the BBC. Across the region, internally displaced people are often crammed in camps without good sanitation, allowing the disease to run rampant. |

| | Two-year-old Ansima Kanigo caught mpox from one of her four siblings, who have all had the disease. Her mother had no idea what it was at first. "When my child got sick, the other parents told me it might be measles, but we started treating measles and failed, so we decided to come here. Three [children] are cured - they are at home. I only have two who I am admitted with now in this hospital." The medical director at the hospital in Kavumu, Dr Robert Musole, says the outbreak should not be underestimated by the authorities. Eight-hundred patients have been seen there since June and eight have died – all under the age of five. |
