Have you ever needed someone to listen to you?

Someone to empathise with what you are going through?

To be there for you as you try to make sense of things…

If you have been touched by cancer, this will ring true for you.

But did you have the support you needed at the time?

Was anyone there for you?

CANSA acknowledges that the cancer journey is not only physically taxing, but emotionally and spiritually taxing also. We’d like you to know that we are here for you if you need support, and we are so excited to be launching our Tele Counselling service on Mandela Day, an extension of our face-to-face counselling service since 1931. It’s our turn to give back to cancer Survivors, family members and caregivers with a service that is professional, confidential, cancer related, provided in seven languages (English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu, siSwati, Sesotho and Setswana) and is completely free of charge. We can’t wait to hear from you.

Make an appointment through the CANSA Help Desk on 0800 22 66 22, on email counselling@cansa.org.za, or via the CANSA website.

Some of the things we can help provide support with are:

  • When a patient or close relative has just been diagnosed with cancer
  • Prior to starting treatment when fear and anxiety are high
  • During the cancer treatment process when coping becomes difficult
  • Once treatment has been completed and 'normal' life has resumed
  • When patients are anxious before routine check-ups / scans
  • When caregivers and family members that are responsible for a cancer patient feel overwhelmed and need guidance and support
  • As part of end-of-life care
  • After the death of a cancer patient when the family needs bereavement counselling and support
  • When the patient is a child / teen and the parents are in need of support

CANSA counselling helped me in 2002 after I lost my father. At that stage I was already a volunteer with the organisation. I felt so relieved and happy to have CANSA on my side and I think that communities will benefit from our new Tele Counselling service.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018, a few months after my graduation as a Social Worker, I was traumatized! I was then referred to the CANSA Oncology Social Worker. CANSA’s visit helped me a lot  and the social worker was very patient and informative on all the questions I had as well as my fears and doubts. She introduced me to a group of survivors, which I’ll be forever grateful for, and she trained me on other types of cancers. This inspired me to become one of the CANSA volunteers under her wing, where I was able to use my social work skills. I wish CANSA can continue to do what they did for me to other people. Thank you CANSA! I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for you.”

My dad was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in December 2018 and passed away in February 2019. I am forever thankful to CANSA as, because of all the training I have received through the them, I could be the best caregiver for my dad. The support from CANSA towards the patient, and the family, was amazing.

Counselling, if it is over a phone or in person, is comforting and shows support! I am 100% in favour of it as telephonic counselling not only supported me as an individual but our family and in the same time inspired me to give back to the organisation.

Mandela Day Donations for Tele Counselling Service

Will you help us reach as many of those affected by cancer as possible, with this free service?

We challenge all to take action and to inspire change this Mandela Day, by donating and sponsoring 67 minutes of counselling. Help us with the costs and expenses to run the service and provide continued in-service training and debriefing sessions to counsellors.

We don’t want to add the burden of payment for these sessions to those who are already battling, so we need your help.

Even Madiba, when he was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2001, reached out to CANSA and benefitted from our support and we’d like to be there for more patients and loved ones and connect with hope.

Our launch includes a webinar in mid-August to health professionals to celebrate this Tele Counselling, in addition to our face-to-face counselling services since 1931. So keep an eye out for this…

We are thankful to our partners, Novartis and Roche who made it possible for CANSA to establish this specialised support system for cancer patients and loved ones.
