Good morning! The University of Pennsylvania announced Tuesday that it will invalidate the records set by transgender swimmer Lia Thomas and apologize to female athletes who were affected. Riley Gaines, the former University of Kentucky swimmer who famously tied for fifth place with UPenn’s Thomas in a 2022 NCAA championship match, was quoted in the news release that the Department of Education issued July 1. “From day one, President Trump and Secretary (Linda) McMahon vowed to protect women and girls, and today’s agreement with UPenn is a historic display of that promise being fulfilled,” Gaines said in the release. Gaines spoke with the Deseret News Wednesday about UPenn’s announcement, the effect it could have on her lawsuit against the NCAA and why she has sympathy for Lia Thomas, her former competitor. | ‘I’m very proud to be a Utahn’: Marie Osmond sings praises to the place she calls home |

| | Margaret Darby writes: Marie Osmond has high praise for Utah and its people. On Tuesday, on the steps of the Capitol in Salt Lake City, the performer and philanthropist said she was “honored” to represent the state in the kickoff event for America250, which marks the beginning of a yearlong celebration leading up to the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. “I love Utah. I love Utah’s people,” Osmond, a Utah native, told the crowd of a couple hundred people gathered around the Capitol steps early Tuesday. “Utah’s beauty is breathtaking, but it’s the people who make it truly special. Utahns love families deeply, and that love extends outward, building strong, close-knit communities,” Osmond continued. “Our communities helped raise my kids, from teachers who helped them learn, to church leaders and coaches who taught them values and hard work, to friends and neighbors who extended friendship.” Read more about Osmond’s comments and the America250 initiative. | The University of Utah is among the top 7% of the top universities in the world, according to the 2025 U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Global Universities.” Coming in at No. 141 out of 2,250, Utah’s flagship university received high rankings for several of its academic and research subjects, including cardiac and cardiovascular systems, clinical medicine, oncology, and surgery. “We are excited to see the University of Utah’s stellar research reputation recognized in this international context,” said Randy McCrillis, the school’s senior international officer. Two other Utah schools, Brigham Young University and Utah State University, were also included in the “Best Global Universities” rankings — listed as No. 817 and No. 827, respectively.
