The referendum repeals Ireland's Eighth Amendment, which was added to the constitution in 1983, which banned abortion in Ireland unless there was a "real and substantial risk" to the mother's life. The vote joins other progressive steps forward for the country, including 2015's historic vote to legalize same-sex marriage.
