Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
Andy McCarthy

Conservative legal pundit and Fox News contributor Andy McCarthy delivered a scathing assessment of Team Trump’s response to this month’s FBI raid of the former president's Mar-a-Lago estate.

In addition to blasting Donald Trump himself, McCarthy went after pro-Trump commentator John Solomon, who recently published documents about the FBI's search in an attempt to damage President Joe Biden.

Solomon’s attempts completely backfired and instead highlighted that Biden declined to invoke executive privilege over the documents Trump allegedly took to Mar-a-Lago.

The document further showed that Trump and his team were given plenty of opportunities to comply but drew out the process.

"Clearly, the purport of Solomon’s news report was to bolster the Trump narrative," he wrote, adding, "but the problem is that Archivist Wall’s letter shreds Trump’s claim."

Wall’s letter proved, McCarthy wrote, that "Trump’s self-absorbed priority was to frustrate the FBI’s examination, rather than to support the government’s patent need to assess the possible damage caused by his mishandling of top-secret intelligence."

"These revelations are condemnable," he argued. "They provide a solid basis for Trump detractors to argue that the Mar-a-Lago search, though stunning and unprecedented, was justified — or at least not unreasonable."

McCarthy concluded his piece by dropping the hammer on Team Trump: “If you are trying not to get indicted, the best defense is usually not a good offense. And it is never an offense that backfires.”

MEDIA LOSER:
Bob Nutting

Bob Nutting, CEO of Ogden Newspapers and owner of the Pittsburgh Pirates, essentially ruined 141-year-old Colorado newspaper the Aspen Times.

Andrew Travers, the former editor of The Aspen Times, called Nutting out in a scathing column about his recent purchase of the paper, noting that Aspen’s journalists were once regarded as "watchdogs and chroniclers of one of the richest towns in America."

"The paper, which was based for much of its history in a purple-painted building between a drugstore and the Hotel Jerome, developed a reputation for shoe-leather reporting and accountability journalism," he wrote.

Nutting, however, introduced a new leadership team at the Times following Ogden's acquisition of the paper -- altering the relationship between Aspen's media and the city's elite.

Ogden has censored and spiked multiple columns and reports on Vladislav Doronin, a U.S.S.R.-born real estate developer who had purchased nearly one acre of Aspen Mountain for $76 million.

Managing editor Rick Carroll began looking into Doronin’s connections to Russia following the country's invasion of Ukraine, explicitly referring to him as an "oligarch" in his reporting.

Doronin filed a defamation suit against the paper, and instead of covering it, Ogden ensured the Times ignored it, as well as Doronin, altogether.

The censorship move prompted several resignations and firings -- and completely demoralized the previously celebrated local paper.

The A-Block

Biden's debt drama

President Joe Biden’s announced on Wednesday that the federal government would forgive certain amounts of student debt for anyone making under $125,000 -- drawing complaints from both sides of the aisle.

The White House announced individual loan borrowers earning less than $125,000 annually will receive $10,000 in debt forgiveness. The same goes for borrowers who are married and whose household income is less than $250,000 per year.

Explaining the relief plan, FiveThirtyEight’s Nate Silver called it "a very ‘transactional’ piece of public policy," noting that it directly serves "the interests of the people who elected you."

"That’s extremely common, though, in the same way that, say, the Trump tax cuts were,” he added.

The debt forgiveness has met with sharp criticism from both the right and the left, with concerns raised about the increase to the national debt, effect on inflation, and whether it is fair to those who did not attend college or who have paid off their student loans.

“Pouring roughly half trillion dollars of gasoline on the inflationary fire that is already burning is reckless,” tweeted Jason Furman, the one-time chief economist to former President Barack Obama.

“Doing it while going well beyond one campaign promise ($10K of student loan relief) and breaking another (all proposals paid for) is even worse.”

On the other hand, activist and Debt Collective co-founder Astra Taylor praised the Biden plan as a “huge stepping stone,” yet argued that it doesn’t go far enough.

'What, like it's hard?'

Hillary Clinton’s latest defeat comes in the form of a battle of wits with realty TV star Kim Kardashian.

In a preview for Clinton's new show, the former secretary of state and Kardashian are seen testing their legal knowledge against each other.

While both have legal backgrounds, Clinton’s runs far deeper. She was a practicing lawyer and law firm partner before she became the first lady.

Kardashian, on the other hand, passed California's "baby bar," has made headlines for advocating for criminal justice reform, and pulled off an iconic Elle Woods Halloween costume in 2019.

Kardashian ultimately won the trivia contest -- schooling Clinton 11-4.
