Updated legal aid for children in care

Following last month’s announcement that legal aid has come back into scope for children in care - Coram Children’s Legal Centre, The Children’s Society, Islington Law Centre, Just for Kids Law, MiCLU and BASW have put together updated practical guidance to raise awareness of the change and the types of children and cases covered. This provides information on the type of advice now covered (including immigration, nationality and family reunion cases) as well information on accessing legal advice. Please use and share with your networks, children's social services and frontline practitioners.

Updated stateless guidance from the Home Office

The Home Office have recently published its updated policy on statelessness. A stateless person is defined as someone who ‘is not considered as a national by any State under the operation of its law’. Someone may be stateless for a number of reasons and the absence of birth certificates, proof of birth/paternity and other evidence can increase the risk of statelessness for children. The policy makes changes to the length of leave provided to those recognised as stateless, as well as further information on how an application is considered. For further information on statelessness and for advice, please see ILPA's best practice guide, Liverpool Law Clinic's webpage and the European Network on Statelessness.

MCP training programme 2020

The Migrant Children’s Project’s training programme aims to help non-legal professionals and carers to improve their understanding of the rights of children and young people. We run 3 courses at our Coram Campus in London - our full day ‘Rights and entitlements of young refugee and migrants’ course, as well as two youth rights trainer-led courses on immigration and access to education. We can also be commissioned for training and our new training offer for local authorities, NGOs and other organisations can be found on our website. For further information on commissioning training, please email us: mcp@coramclc.org.uk
