Following their meeting, the Emergency Committee will advise the WHO Director-General as to whether the mpox multi-country outbreak still constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). The Emergency Committee will also review the temporary recommendations issued to WHO and its Member States. The Emergency Committee statement, once issued, will be shared with the media. The first meeting of the IHR Emergency Committee for mpox was convened by the WHO Director-General on 23 June 2022, following a surge in mpox transmission reported since the beginning of May 2022 in countries that had not previously reported cases. At that time, the advice of the Emergency Committee was that this event did not constitute a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). On 21 July 2022, the Committee met for the second time without reaching a consensus on the determination of a PHEIC for the multi-country outbreak of mpox. Recognizing the complexities and uncertainties associated with the event and having considered the views of the Committee members, the Director-General declared the mpox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 23 July 2022. The Emergency Committee continued to meet every three months as required under the IHR, on 20 October 2022 and on 9 February 2023.
