Artificial Intelligence is becoming a bigger and bigger part of our lives. And soon, you'll be able to get a master's degree in it at UAB, reports AL.com's Williesha Morris. The school will offer a Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence in Medicine beginning Spring 2025. School officials say the program makes UAB a world leader in the field. Dr. Rubin Pillay said AI is expected to impact health care quality, costs and more. “We can actually just from a chest X-ray, diagnose diabetes, diagnose cardiovascular risk and diagnose a host of other medical conditions,” he said. You know, that technology will be great at the doctor's office, but what I need are medical bots at grocery scanners to recommend I put the bacon back on the shelf. Would that be helpful or annoying? You might set off the buzzer at the door: "Excuse me, Hoss, but I detected a higher blood pressure than your last visit and there's red meat in your buggy." |

A 21-year-old man from Georgia took a 40-foot fall from atop the falls in Little River Canyon on Sunday, reports AL.com's William Thornton. Emergency responders found the man on a rock ledge beneath the falls and used equipment to pull him back to the top, from where he was then airlifted for medical care. The National Park Service reminded visitors to "utilize caution when in the park." |

Clay Holmes of Slocumb will join Gunnar Henderson of Selma on the American League All-Star team next week, reports AL.com's Mark Inabinett. Holmes is a right-handed closer for the New York Yankees and now a two-time all-star. So far this season he has 19 saves and a 3.00 earned-run average. He's struck out 37 batters in 36 innings of work. Henderson had already been named to the team, with fans voting him the AL's starting shortstop. After the starting lineups are set, pitchers and reserves are selected by player voting and the Commissioner's Office. The Major League All-Star Game will be 7 p.m. Alabama time next Tuesday, July 16, in Arlington, Texas. |
And speaking of making the team ... AL.com's Joseph Goodman reports that Birmingham native Tanner Tessmann will be on the U.S. men's soccer team during this summer's Paris Olympics. Tessmann, by the way, is the godson of Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney. |
