OZY Tribe, Which is the most successful ethnic group in the U.S.? (It may surprise you.) Which tiny island paradise is showing Africa how to beat malaria (with a GDP per capita of just $3,200)? And what can the foreskin of Jesus teach us all? There are zillions of questions out there that you didn't know you wanted answered ... until OZY posed them. While working at The Times of London as head of news — I was the first woman to hold that role and the youngest in the paper's 230-year history — my eye was caught by OZY's insatiable curiosity and off-the-beaten-track stories. In a decade of covering news in Britain, I had met Usain Bolt and the Queen, won awards for exposing tax avoidance by the rich and famous, and spent an awkward evening in a Parisian swingers' club apparently frequented by the head of the International Monetary Fund. Next stop? OZY. My passion stems back to my teenage years when, brimming with energy but completely clueless about what I wanted to do, a veteran news reporter delivered an electrifying lecture at Oxford University. "Journalism is like having a front seat on the arena of the world," he said. From that moment, I was hooked. I moved from local news to the Guardian, Daily Mail and finally The Times. That journey has now brought me to OZY, where I'm thrilled to have become the new managing editor. A front seat on the arena of the world is exactly what OZY strives to give you. But this particular seat is equipped with an elevated view — right into the future. We want to put you in the heart of China where robots are set to take over policing and surfers ride killer urban waves. We want to bring you up close and personal with today's rising stars and tomorrow's thought leaders, from the feisty face of Russian diplomacy to a teenager taking on oil drillers in L.A. We want to challenge your assumptions, deliver delicious recommendations, make you laugh and leave you stunned. We call OZY the New News because it doesn't only cover the same dozen stories featured by outlets around the globe. With our morning email, The Presidential Daily Brief, OZY catches you up on what's happening now. The Daily Dose puts you ahead of the curve with a smorgasbord of forward-looking original stories. Twice weekly, our Special Briefing emails give you alternative takes on current affairs to make you smarter and savvier, so you know just what to say at the watercooler. Going forward, you can expect more hard-hitting investigations and thought-provoking columnists. There'll be more podcasts, more TV (I do hope you've joined the millions tuning into our primetime show Breaking Big) and more tales from both sides of the political divide via our cutting-edge U.S. midterms coverage. In short, we're giving you a competitive edge on the world among friends, colleagues, competitors — and in life. I'd love to hear your thoughts on OZY and ideas for stories and issues we should cover. You can email me at managingeditor@ozy.com. Do check out our new Facebook pages, OZY World and OZY Future — and if you're coming to OZY Fest in NYC next month, I look forward to seeing you there. With all the best to you and yours, Fay Schlesinger |
