| | The small southern Utah town of Enoch was reeling Thursday after finding out that 42-year-old Michael Haight shot and killed his wife, their five children and his mother-in-law, before turning the gun on himself, police say. Michael Haight, his wife Tausha Haight, 40, Tausha’s mother Gail Earl, 78, and the couple’s five children — a 17-year-old daughter, 12-year-old daughter, 7-year-old daughter, 7-year-old son and a 4-year-old son — were all found deceased Wednesday afternoon at about 4 p.m. | The general legislative session starts Jan. 17, and the GOP-controlled House and Senate have a long list of items they want to accomplish. Senate President Stuart Adams and House Speaker Brad Wilson spoke with Deseret News about their priorities. Here’s what they have planned. Tax cuts: Drop the income tax rate from 4.85% to 4.75%. Give a total $400 million rebate to taxpayers. Provide a new tax credit allowing parents to double the dependent tax exemption in one year covering both a newborn and unborn child. Education: The Governor’s recommendation of a pay raise for teachers is likely to resurrect a “school choice” voucher system debate. Lawmakers are likely to revisit removing a constitutional earmark which uses income tax to pay for education in order to correct a “structural imbalance.” Water: Speaker Wilson expects to invest a similar amount into water management as last year’s budget: $500 million. Passage of a bill to educate people about water conservation. Hot button issues: At least two bills have already been filed focusing on surgical transitions for transgender youth. Lawmakers are expected to make changes to the state’s abortion ban. See what else is on the docket here. More in Politics: Utah Rep.
