Plus: A celebration of writers, surfers, war journalists and more
| | "We just started saying we're not going to put up with it anymore." In the late 80s and early 90s, Jodie Cooper and Pauline Menczer were among the best surfers in the world. But it was hard to be a woman — let alone one who was gay — in that era's conservative and homophobic surfing culture. On the podcast Days Like These, hear Jodie and Pauline talk about what it was like to push back against the tide, and how things have changed for women in the sport since then. It's just one of the stories I've included in this week's newsletter that are either written by women, presented by women, or celebrating their achievements. On that note, I hope you had a happy International Women's Day! And on another, I'm about to take leave for the next 12 months — so you might see some other names on these newsletters. They'll still have the same great mix of stories and news from the Radio National network, so please keep reading and sharing these emails with your friends. Until next time, Rosie Ryan, digital editor Enjoy getting Radio National in your inbox? Forward to a friend so they can too! |
