Merz elected German chancellor after unprecedented second-round vote

The German parliament elected Friedrich Merz as German chancellor on Tuesday, following a massive setback in the morning that saw him fall short of a majority on his first attempt.

A total of 325 of the 630 delegates in the Bundestag, the lower house of Germany's parliament, voted for the leader of the Christian Democrats (CDU). Merz needed 316 votes to secure a majority.
