Alone with prisoners, no time away: Michigan corrections officers say they need relief |
To know: Working solo around violent prisoners isfv not new for corrections officers who say they are at a breaking point amid a long-running staffing shortage. As of July, the average vacancy rate across all state prisons was 18.5%, according to the Michigan Department of Corrections. Officers inside Michigan’s 26 prisons are being overworked putting the lives of themselves and those they watch over in peril, corrections officers say, and they are calling on lawmakers to address this issue. One possible aid: State legislators are discussing House Bill 5912 to remove prerequisite college credit requirements for new officer recruits, widen the possible pool of candidates and bring officers relief. In crime: Minutes into his sister’s testimony about the events leading up to the shooting death of his father, Timothy John Kildee interrupted the court, blasted profanities at the judge and was removed from a hearing in his case. The 27-year-old is accused of killing his father, Timothy Edward Kildee. Timothy Edward Kildee is the brother of U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee. |

No, Michigan isn’t getting more tornadoes, but they are changing |
Some Michiganders feel like the summer storm season has grown worse. It turns out the state is not, in fact, getting more tornadoes than in the past. What Michigan is seeing, however, is what one scientist calls more “big days,” meaning multiple tornadoes in one day, rather than spread over time. Ten of Michigan’s 13 twisters this year happened in just four days. While we're outside: Don’t wait until next spring to think about our landscape backbone. Trees and shrubs need to be fed very soon to get off to rocketing growth coming out of winter. On the road: There’s less than a month until it’s officially fall in Michigan, and work crews are making the most of the warm days they have left. Here are 10 road closures on tap this week throughout the state. |

Former President Donald Trump plans to make another campaign stop in Michigan – making it his third visit to the battleground state in nine days. Campaign officials announced Trump will deliver remarks on “the economy, inflation and manufacturing,” on Thursday, Aug. 29 in Potterville. Trump also plans to visit Detroit today for the National Guard Association of the United States’ 146th General Conference. That event is not open to the public. The latest: Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy is under investigation by the state Bureau of Elections after he used his department to host Donald Trump for a campaign event last week. Two complaints filed with the state allege he violated the Michigan Campaign Finance Act. |

‘This was crazy’: Ford Field sells out, forces false start ... in preseason! |
Ready for the real: The Detroit Lions not only sold standing-room tickets for their preseason finale on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, but sold out of them. Then they treated hometown fans to a 24-17 comeback win. The raucous crowd even drew a false start at one point. Go back in time: The long, rich history of the Detroit Lions organization is featured in a new exhibit which opened over the weekend. “Gridiron Heroes” at the Detroit Historical Museum features items on loan from the Pro Football Hall of Fame and from the Detroit Lions archives. His favorite team at the wheel: A diehard Lions fan’s vintage 1957 Ford Fairlane was featured in Sports Illustrated's "Football Preview 2024" issue, which highlighted several of the Detroit Lions' All-Pro players. |

Want to see elk in Michigan? Here's the best time and place |
Catch a glimpse: Despite weighing between 400 and 900 pounds and standing 5 feet tall at the shoulder, elks can be quite elusive. Next month you’ll have a better chance of seeing, and hearing, elk as they enter breeding season. About 1,000 elk live in the elk range of southern Cheboygan, Otsego and Montmorency Counties. Find viewing tips here. Proposing stronger protections: Michigan lawmakers are drafting legislation that aims to curb development in coastal dunes. State Reps. Rachel Hood, D-Grand Rapids, and Joey Andrews, D-St. Joseph, announced forthcoming legislation this week that would stiffen barriers to development in coastal dune areas regulated as “critical” under state law. Pressure is on to expand recreation: State game areas are primarily set aside for hunting, bird-watching and animal habitat. What happens when mountain bikers, horseback riders and ORV users want in? |
