Give your holiday cheer a boost this weekend |
Christmas is just a few weeks away and plenty of Michigan towns are in the full swing of parades, holiday markets, larger-than-life winter wonderland displays, Santa visits and more. If you want to get in on the holiday spirit, here are a few events happening this weekend. Revel in small town charm while taking in an annual Christmas parade through downtown Whitehall and Montague on Saturday. Swing by Muskegon to enjoy a Singing Christmas Tree, breakfasts with Santa, or drop a letter to the North Pole at Santa’s letter box at Hackley Park. Up North, St. Ambrose Cellars in Beulah is putting a folky twist on "The Haunting of Ebenezer" during its Bee Merry Weekend. Step back in time to the 1800s by watching Manistee’s Victorian Sleighbell Parade on Saturday, Dec. 7. |

Michigan drivers could face $100 fine for driving too close to snowplows |
New rule: As a winter storm bears down on Michigan, drivers could face a $100 ticket if they follow a snowplow too closely not just during this storm but all winter. The civil infraction is new this year after being signed into law by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in July in an effort to reduce winter crashes. The distance rule doesn’t apply when drivers are attempting to pass a snowplow. The winds associated with this Clipper storm system and Arctic blast were responsible for whipping up snow squalls and white-out conditions across the state. Top wind gusts of 74 mph were recorded at the South Haven Regional Airport at 6:55 p.m., according to the National Weather Service. Snow day: Multiple West Michigan schools are closed Thursday, Dec. 5, as a storm system brings heavy snow and gusty winds. |

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan to run for Michigan governor as independent |
In the running: Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, a longtime Democrat, announced he is running for Michigan governor in 2026 as an independent. Duggan’s announcement comes less than a month after he declared he would not seek reelection next year as Detroit’s mayor. Some of the most pressing issues Duggan sees for the state are the exodus of young people and that schools need more resources to prepare children for success. Making history: Alyshia Dyer broke barriers Tuesday evening in Washtenaw County, becoming the county’s first female sheriff. Dyer, a Democrat, clinched the sheriff’s seat by a little less than 400 votes in August’s primary, beating out competitors Derrick Jackson and Ken Magee. she plans to approach her time as sheriff with a focus on reform and building trust with the community. Take a look: Michigan’s roads are deteriorating faster than they can be fixed, sparking continued calls for new funding streams for infrastructure maintenance and repairs. Here's a map that includes the latest road grades from the 2023 report and road ratings in your area. |

Losses in China lead to $5 billion charge for General Motors as it cuts the value of its assets |
Automaker: The poor performance of General Motors' Chinese joint ventures is forcing the company to write down assets and take a restructuring charge totaling more than $5 billion in the fourth quarter of this year. China has become an increasingly difficult market for foreign automakers, with BYD and other domestic companies raising their quality and reducing costs. The country also has subsidized domestic automakers. More apartments: Another luxury-branded apartment high-rise geared toward University of Michigan students is moving forward near South University Avenue in Ann Arbor. Texas-based developer LV Collective announced it has closed on financing for the 17-story development known as Rambler Ann Arbor at 711 Church St., where site work began in October. Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson’s job duties include law enforcement, jail management and providing court services. But another responsibility—responding to Freedom of Information Act requests—is becoming enough of a job that he’s asking the county Board of Commissioners to establish a new position dedicated to the task. |

NFC playoff picture: Lions can clinch postseason berth this week, win or lose |
If the Lions top the Green Bay Packers on Thursday night in Detroit, they’ll finish the night by celebrating a playoff berth and the franchise’s first consecutive playoff berths since 1993-95. If Detroit wins, they’ll move to 12-1 on the season and officially clinch one of the six NFC playoff spots with four games left in the regular season, becoming the first team to do so. But even if the Lions lose on Thursday, they could still clinch that playoff during Week 14 spot via some help from other teams. Michigan-Ohio State remains college football’s biggest rivalry for a reason. This year’s edition of The Game was the Big Ten’s most-watched telecast of the season, drawing more than 12.3 million viewers to FOX according to viewership numbers released by Nielsen Media Research on Wednesday. Policy changes: The top female golf circuits in the world have updated their gender policies. The LPGA and USGA announced Wednesday that only athletes that have been assigned female at birth are eligible to compete on the LPGA Tour, Epson Tour, Ladies European Tour, and in all other elite LPGA competitions. Players who have transitioned to female before going through male puberty are also eligible. |

Michigan Capitol’s 2024 Christmas Ornament is selling out fast |
Grab one: The 2024 Michigan Capitol Christmas ornament - an annual holiday tradition going back two decades - highlights the three sets of grand double doors facing east on the capitol’s first floor and leading to what once was the building’s main entrance. Barb Thumudo, assistant director of Michigan Capitol facilities, said this year’s ornament is interactive. Hinged doors that open and close allow the viewer to see into the capitol rotunda. For the first time, the Amway Grand Plaza’s bake shop team has crafted a 9-foot-tall replica of the hotel, adorned with royal icing, candy and lights. The gingerbread house will be displayed in the historic Pantlind Lobby at 187 Monroe Ave. NW in downtown Grand Rapids now through Jan. 1, 2025. Back on stage: The Flint Symphony Orchestra, Flint School of Performing Arts ballet students, and professional guest dancers will bring the magical Nutcracker production to life once again on Saturday, Dec. 7, and Sunday, Dec. 8, at the Whiting Auditorium in Flint. |
