Tesla supplier begins nickel drilling near remote Michigan lake |
To know: Talon Metals, a company developing the Tamarack Mine in Minnesota, began exploratory drilling for potential nickel deposits this summer in the western Upper Peninsula. In June, Talon announced the launch of drilling at the “Roland Target,” one of several areas in a roughly 425,000-acre swath of the U.P. the company considers “highly prospective” thanks to its location along a geologically unique mid-continental rift. Also in environmental news: The Michigan Department of Natural Resources announced this week that 9,118,112 fish weighing nearly 321 tons were stocked in Michigan waters in the spring and summer of 2024. In public interest: What is THCA and why did a Michigan marijuana business import it from Colorado? |

Big cooldown coming for Michigan, almost a fall preview |
Refreshing: A drastic change is coming in both air temperature and humidity levels. A cold front will race through all of Michigan Friday and Saturday and bring in new air. There is at least a temporary end in sight to the tropical oppressive air we’ve had for the past few weeks. It’s a little early in summer to say this will be the last bout of hot, humid air. Special something may come: The sun has been quite active in the past few days as not one but two X flares occurred in one day. This could possibly bring a chance for Northern Lights sometime this week. Look up: This week the Northern Hemisphere is expected to see an epic light show as the Perseid meteor shower reaches its peak. The Shoreline Amateur Astronomical Association (SAAA) is hosting a Meteors and S’mores event from 9-11 p.m. Monday, Aug. 12 at Holland State Park. |

Lions down 5 players after physical practice with Giants; first-rounder back |
Injury-stricken Detroit Lions: Emmanuel Moseley has been lost for the long term due to a torn pectoral. Defensive back Ifeatu Melifonwu, guard Kevin Zeitler (shoulder) and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez also will not practice on Tuesday due to injuries they suffered during a physical first day of work with the New York Giants, while tight end Sam LaPorta (hamstring) also will not suit up due to a minor injury he suffered last week. In Paris: Ann Arbor native Hobbs Kessler finished his first Olympic finals race with the best performance of his life. In what was one of the more highly anticipated track and field races of the 2024 Summer Olympics, Kessler ran a personal-best time of 3 minutes, 29.45 seconds in Tuesday’s 1500-meter run final to place fifth among the best in the world. Tune in: The sign-stealing saga that enveloped Michigan football last season is still not in the program’s rear view mirror. A report with information about the NCAA’s draft of its notice of allegations brought the topic back into the news this week. That’s the focus of the latest episode of the Wolverine Confidential podcast. |

Why every day is National Lighthouse Day in Michigan |
Showing some appreciation: Today is National Lighthouse Day! But in Michigan, every day can be a celebration of these life-saving landmarks. “Michigan ranks no. 1 nationally with more than 120 lighthouses along our 3,288 miles of Great Lakes coastline,” said Kelly Wolgamott, interim vice president of Travel Michigan. “National Lighthouse Day provides an opportunity to honor the vital role these historic beacons have played in our state’s rich maritime culture and to celebrate our Great Lakes lighthouses as a source of inspiration to visit Michigan during all four seasons.” Getting noticed: An inn tucked into a Michigan winery has just beaten out places in Napa Valley, among others, for the top spot to stay at in a winery in the entire country. Chateau Chantal, which is located just north of Traverse City on the Old Mission Peninsula, is No. 1 on USA Today’s 10Best list for Best Wine Country Hotel. |
