I spent over a week in Alaska exploring the Arctic Circle and Fairbanks. Although I had an incredible experience camping in the mountains, I'm glad to be out of a tent and writing to you again. Nearing the end of a long plane ride, there was nothing better than watching us fly over Lake Michigan. Maybe I should've looked closer to possibly see a portion of the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac that took place over the weekend! In some personal news - I returned from Alaska with a lot of souvenirs, but my favorite was an engagement ring. |

Michigan lands on national list for worst short-term rental growth in the next 5 years |
To know: The mitten state is known for its fresh lakes, scenic trails and a growing four-season tourism scene. Despite all that, Michigan recently landed on a national list for worst short-term rental growth. AirDNA, a software company that analyzes Airbnb data, ranked Michigan's northern and western coasts among the worst nationally for projected short-term rental growth. Michigan markets landed at the bottom because major feeder cities, like Detroit, are losing population. More in business: An ethanol plant that once processed 19 million bushels a year into fuel and other products hasn’t produced a drop in years. That could change under new ownership. |

Trump campaign sues Whitmer, Benson over using federal offices to register voters |
The Republican National Committee and Donald Trump’s presidential campaign have sued Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, claiming she overstepped her authority by arranging for Veteran’s Affairs medical centers and Small Business Administration offices to act as voter registration agencies. Could be the next VP: Donald Trump chose U.S. Sen. JD Vance as his running mate on Monday, ending months of speculation as the Republican National Convention kicked off in Milwaukee. The latest: A group of Catholic therapists is arguing in a federal lawsuit that Michigan’s recent ban on conversion therapy for minors limits their ability to counsel children who have questions about gender identity. |

Essexville teacher accused of inappropriate relationship with student will not be charged |
An update:Prosecutors have declined to charge a former Essexville teacher alleged to have had an inappropriate relationship with a student. A police investigation found the teacher and student exchanged thousands of messages over a significant timespan. Police noted in their reports the messages “look like two people engaged in a dating relationship[,] however no mention of anything sexual took place within the … screenshots.” Also in crime: A Saginaw man has been charged with a “crime against nature,” that of sexually abusing a dog. Blaze: An early morning fire that broke out at a Grand Rapids recycling center was caused by a lightning strike, a fire investigator confirmed. |

Calvin Johnson immortalized in Lions history with Pride of the Lions honor |
Calvin Johnson has already reached the NFL’s holy grail of high honors—he’s in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. But now the six-time Pro Bowler has another football accolade to add to his resume. On Monday, the Detroit Lions announced they are adding Johnson to the Pride of the Lions. Making the team: University of Michigan star Fred Richard dominated the United States men’s gymnastics trials and automatically clinched a spot in the group of five that will represent the country for the Paris Games. In baseball: Dante Nori, a recent graduate from Northville High School, was drafted in the first round of the MLB Draft on Sunday night. Selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 27th overall pick, Nori was the first high school player from Michigan to be taken in this year’s draft. |

Ann Arbor Art Fair attracts thousands, but parking, traffic snarls frustrate locals |
On one July weekend in Ann Arbor, thousands of people flock to the Ann Arbor Art Fair. Travelers from across the country flood the city's streets during the three-day affair. It is well renowned as one of the top art fairs. But some have a different feeling about the attention - and crowds - the fair brings. A mixture of transportation concerns, historically poor weather and parking issues are areas of frustration for some residents. New sights to see: While the Ann Arbor Art Fair has become a tradition, there are a few new events and exhibits making an appearance during the 2024 fair from Thursday, July 18, to Saturday, July 20.
