In today's newsletter, Black Lake sturgeon season is on the way, Michigan university reveals 2025 Banished Words List and a look at Michigan’s weekend weather. |
One of the biggest games in Ford Field history happens this Sunday when the Detroit Lions play the Minnesota Vikings in a winner- takes-all showdown. This isn't your regular Sunday football game either. The winner of the showdown between the Lions (14-2) and Vikings (14-2) wins the NFC North, earns the No. 1 seed and home field advantage during the playoffs. The Lions even teased that the team could be bringing back their black jerseys for the matchup. Detroit native, Michigan State alum and platinum selling artist Charlie XCII is set to perform during the halftime show. Speaking of Ford Field, the stadium has landed in the top 10 of an ESPN poll of the NFL’s toughest places to play. |

Michigan’s iconic Black Lake sturgeon season to return, here’s what to know |
Gone fishing: Anglers will hope Michigan’s shortest fishing season goes off without a hitch in 2025. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources released details about its annual lake sturgeon fishing season on Black Lake in Cheboygan County. The event is scheduled for 8 a.m. on Feb. 1. The iconic fishing event, which is short due to a conservation-driven low harvest limit of just six fish, was canceled for the first time in 2024 due to mild temperatures and thin ice. It lasted just 65 minutes in 2023. All anglers must register online by Jan. 31 to participate in the fishing season, and those age 17 or older must have a valid Michigan fishing license. For the kids: Young anglers looking to embrace Michigan winters and test their skills under ice can learn the essentials at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. The Friends of Sleeping Bear, a volunteer nonprofit, is hosting four Saturday sessions starting Jan. 18, to teach young anglers ice fishing skills, safety measures, and fishing regulations. |

Cringe, 100%: Michigan university reveals 2025 Banished Words List |
Find a different word: If you’re ready to make 2025 a game changer by retiring stale words that are just so cringe, Lake Superior State University can get behind that 100%. This college in the Upper Peninsula kicked off the New Year by releasing its quirky annual Banished Words List - a Top 10 compilation of words that are overused, used incorrectly or just generally in need of retirement. In the classroom: Student attendance rates in Ottawa County schools are inching in the right direction, according to public school numbers released by the Michigan Department of Education. Chronic absenteeism rates are also slightly on the rise, however, drawing out a persisting problem across the state and nation that saw dramatic increases during the COVID-19 pandemic and a slow recovery in the years since. Higher ed: In just over two years since the state began offering stipends to young student educators, over $80 million has been given out. Some universities, through their students, are receiving more than others. |

Michigan’s weekend weather: 3 things to know |
Weekend ahead: This weekend we have full-on winter weather across our state. The first snow situation is all lake-effect snow. This means the eastern two-thirds of Lower Michigan won’t have much more than flurries while the western third gets up to 10 inches of snow by Friday evening. Sunday will have occasional random snow showers, but nothing that lasts a long time at any one spot. Skywatching: We’re starting off the New Year with a really good meteor shower. The Quadrantids - which will peak on Friday - are happening against the backdrop of a crescent moon. This slim slice of moonlight means meteors will show up bright against a dark night sky. The meteors could be plentiful. NASA says the Quadrantids' peak could have as many as 120 meteors per hour, according to the Associated Press. Environmental news: A 420-acre swath of state forestland will be cleared for a solar farm near Gaylord under a lease agreement with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, confirmed a top state official. |
