Baby, it's cold outside☃️❄️ |
Michigan is still in the icy grips of Jack Frost this week as most of the state is still under a Cold Weather advisory this morning. The National Weather Service in Marquette forecast dangerously cold wind chills, as low as 25 degrees below zero, in the Upper Peninsula. If you have to go outside, be sure to bundle up. The cold wind chills can cause frostbite on exposed skin within 30 minutes. Before heading out for the day, take a moment to double check winter essentials for your home and car. Here are five things to keep in your vehicle's emergency kit during the winter. |

Michigan’s weather this week: Dangerous wind chills, up to half-foot of snow for lake-effect areas |
The week ahead: We start our week with truly Arctic air, a brisk wind and dangerous wind chills. From Kalkaska to Manistee County down the shoreline west of Grand Rapids to South Haven could have a total of six inches of snow by Tuesday night. The rest of us in Lower Michigan will have occasional spurts of snow only amounting to an inch or two. Tuesday morning will be the most dangerous for frost bite with wind chills between 15 degrees below zero and 25 degrees below zero. The second half of the work week is much quieter in weather and very slowly warming out of the Arctic deep freeze. It won’t be warm, and we probably won’t crack the freezing mark at most Michigan cities until this time next week. We eventually warm to the high-20s statewide Friday and Saturday afternoon. Changes are coming: A fairly significant weather pattern shift is on the way. It looks like the truly Arctic air fades away late this week, and a switch to slightly warmer-than-normal temperatures will develop in the last days of February and first days of March. |

These 9 Michigan universities are nationally elite at research, prestigious group says |
Best of the best: There are over 90 colleges and universities in Michigan, but only a few are at the top of the list of nationally recognized research institutions. The American Council on Education and Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching released the 2025 research activity designations and these nine Michigan universities made the list. Muskegon Public Schools is launching its Innovation Academies of Muskegon through a partnership with Ford Motor Company to help students explore career pathways while in high school. Through the partnership, the district has earned a designation as a Ford Next Generation Learning (Ford NGL) community, partnering with the motor company’s philanthropic arm, which has worked with school districts for 20 years. Also in education: The Grand Rapids teacher’s union is urging the school board to sign off on a 7.5% raise to improve the district’s retention and competitiveness. |

Protesters slam Trump, Musk’s ‘oligarch’ rule, call for action at Michigan Capitol |
Protesting: Below-freezing weather and last-minute organizational changes didn’t stop several hundred Michiganders from gathering at the state Capitol in defiance of the second Donald Trump administration. At least 700 people protested Monday, Feb. 17 on the Capitol lawn in Lansing, using signs and chants to air their grievances with governmental leadership, on both the state and national levels. Much of the crowd’s anger was directed toward Trump and billionaire Elon Musk, who leads the newly-created Department of Government Efficiency. With environmental protections and climate programs in the crosshairs in the early days of President Donald Trump’s second term, some say the stakes are high for the Great Lakes State. To underscore the point, dozens of Michiganders braved snowy roads to rally in Detroit on Saturday, Feb. 15, protesting the new administration’s firing of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency staffers, pledges to ease regulations for corporate polluters and efforts to turn off the spigot of federal money flowing to clean energy. Legal battle: A group of mid-Michigan property owners is asking the state’s Supreme Court to rule that they should not have to pay for repairs to a series of dams that failed in 2020. The dam failures caused widespread flooding and forced many evacuations. |

Ranking all 59 Tigers on their chances of making 2025 Opening Day roster |
Making the cut: The Tigers have decisions to make that will shape both ends of their roster—from their most experienced veterans to their youngest prospects. Manager A.J. Hinch will address the team this morning, setting the stage for a five-week battle that will trim the roster from 59 to 26 for Opening Day on March 27 in Los Angeles. On the court: Michigan made the biggest jump of any team in Monday’s AP Top 25 men’s basketball poll. The Wolverines climbed eight spots to No. 12 in the weekly rankings after another perfect week, their highest ranking since the 2021-22 season. They’ve won six in a row and are 20-5 overall and in first place in the Big Ten at 12-2. High school sports: The biggest battles in Michigan high school wrestling are on the horizon, beginning with the team state finals on Friday and Saturday at Kalamazoo’s Wings Event Center and ending with the individual state finals at Detroit’s Ford Field on February 28 and March 1. Here is everything you need to know heading into an exciting weekend of high school wrestling. |

Donations sought for 3 abandoned children found living in piles of trash, feces |
The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office is asking for clothing donations for three children who were allegedly abandoned by their mother and found living in filth. Two girls, ages 12 and 13, along with their 15-year-old brother were found in a home Friday as part of a welfare check. Police discovered the trio living amongst piles of garbage, feces and mold. The boy told police their mother abandoned them in 2020 or 2021. In Kalamazoo: A person died in what appears to be a self-inflicted shooting at a police station on the campus of Western Michigan University, a school official confirmed. A Michigan man has been charged after he allegedly drove more than 700 miles to Pennsylvania and started a house fire. Harrison Jones, 21, of Rockford, has been charged in Bensalem Township with six counts of attempted homicide and arson. Six adults were forced to evacuate the residence, some of which jumped from second-story windows. Two dogs died in the blaze, police said. |
