Detroit style pizza is in the national spotlight |
I have never been the biggest pizza fan. Some pizzas I've tried in the past had an obscene amount of mozzarella while others had a flimsy crust that faltered under the weight of its toppings. That all changed when I moved to Motor City and had a Detroit style pie for the first time. After inhaling the sauce-topped square pizza that struck a perfect balance of crispy crust, cheese and veggies, I never looked back. Buddy's Detroit Style Pizza is earning national attention this week after being featured on Food & Wine's 10 Must-Visit Pizzerias in the United States list. The publication highlights the history of the iconic square shaped pizzas and its unique order of assembly. Buddy's has more than 20 locations across Michigan. While we're on the topic of Detroit-based pizza, Little Caesar's is rolling out a $9.99 value menu nationwide for the first time. |

Nutella maker to buy Kellogg for $3.1B, hints at future in Battle Creek |
Making a deal: Kellogg is being sold in a $3.1 billion deal to the Ferrero Group, the companies confirmed in a news release on Thursday, July 10. After the transaction closes, Battle Creek will remain a core location for the company and will be Ferrero’s headquarters for North America cereal, the news release states. The news release didn’t mention if there could be any layoffs in Battle Creek due to the acquisition. Laid off: Marshall Excelsior Co., a 49-year-old Michigan manufacturing plant announced this week that it will be closing, eliminating 71 jobs in the process. The manufacturer will begin layoffs on Sept. 26, and eliminate 18 jobs prior to the end of the year, according to the notice. More layoffs: A Walker-based defense contractor is cutting 64 jobs, nearly half its workforce, according to a state filing. Plasan North America is planning to permanently lay off the workers because of the cancellation of a government contract, the company told the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity. The company said the layoffs began on July 2. |

4 takeaways from CDC warning on international travel as measles cases rise |
What to know: On Wednesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that measles cases in the U.S. this year have already surpassed 2019’s 1,274 cases for the year. That is the largest number of cases in the U.S. in more than 30 years. While cases are on the rise in the U.S., back in May, the CDC issued a warning for those planning to travel internationally. Here are four takeaways from the CDC’s warning if you plan to travel abroad. Healthcare fraud: A Cedar Springs doctor is accused of writing fraudulent prescriptions for Adderall and other drugs that earned him $1 million. A recently unsealed indictment in U.S. District for the Western District of Michigan alleges that Jonathan William Decker worked with a California company to write prescriptions without properly diagnosing patients. Catching a ride: Healthy Rides Flint-Genesee, a non-emergency medical transportation service, officially launched Thursday, July 10. The service is now offering safe and reliable rides to residents across Flint and Genesee County who need help getting to medical appointments. |

Michigan approves 95 miles of new power lines despite concerns over ‘lazy’ route |
Power lines: Michigan regulators approved nearly 100 miles of new high-voltage transmission lines cutting through the Lower Peninsula, while criticizing the company behind them for showing "blatant disregard" for affected landowners. The $850-million project aims to reduce blackout risks and allow cheaper power to flow into Michigan, with an estimated $6-9 billion in benefits for consumers over 20 years. Lucas Smolcic Larson reports that many rural property owners face the prospect of 100-foot power poles on their land, with developers expected to use eminent domain to acquire necessary easements. Firefly decline: Despite some Michiganders noticing more fireflies this summer, researchers have documented a long-term population decline as part of the broader "insect apocalypse." Michigan State University scientists have tracked firefly numbers for over 20 years, finding dramatic year-to-year fluctuations but an overall downward trend since 2017, reports Ruth Thornton. Experts cite pesticide use, land development, and climate change as likely culprits. Meet the scientists: The University of Michigan Biological Station will host an open house on July 13 where visitors can learn about ongoing research, including their Great Lakes Piping Plover conservation program. Sheri McWhirter reports that scientists at the facility incubate eggs, care for chicks, and train them to forage before release. The station also offers free public lectures on topics like invasive species and monarch butterfly migrations. |

Restoration of 98-year-old Lake Michigan lighthouse begins this week |
Getting a revamp: Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse, built in 1927, will undergo upgrades this year and open to visitors in 2026, Lakeshore Keepers said in a news release. Next summer, the public will be welcomed into this treasured landmark for tours, educational programs, and breathtaking views from the lantern room, officials said. Cherry picking: Cherry season has begun. Wasem Fruit Farm in Augusta Township, south of Ypsilanti, is the only farm within 20 minutes of Ann Arbor that sells u-pick cherries. They last for one to two weeks once their ready, and this year the season began July 3. Award-winning: More national accolades are pouring in for one of Michigan’s gems. Mackinac Island has just been named the No. 3 Best Island in the Continental U.S. by Travel + Leisure. |
