Need something to do this weekend? Check out these festivals |
Another week is wrapping up and it's time we jump into a few festivities happening across Michigan this weekend. Whether you're taking in the great outdoors or swinging by one of the following festivals, there is plenty to do. The 85th Red Flannel Festival kicks off today, in Cedar Springs with a community-wide carnival and first responders parade. Saturday is officially Red Flannel Day—be sure to wear red or the Keystone Kops will toss you in jail. Learn about beekeeping, take a wagon ride, dress a scarecrow and more at Chippewa Nature Center's annual Fall Harvest Festival on Saturday in Midland. If you're looking to do more festival hopping, head to Washtenaw County. The Dexter Apple Daze, Holy Bones Festival, Ypsi Freak Fest, Ypsilanti’s Fall Fest, Jacob’s Fresh Farm Fall Festival, and Remodelers Home Tour all take place this weekend. There are also two fall festivals happening in Ottawa County. |

Michigan sees worst outbreak of deer disease causing die-offs in over a decade |
For some local herds of Michigan deer, late summer and early fall has been a deadly period. Since early September, a sometimes fatal disease spread by a biting fly to white-tailed deer has now been confirmed in 11 counties across Southwest Michigan, making for the worst outbreak observed in the state in 12 years, Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials say. What's causing it? Epizootic hemorrhagic disease, or EHD, is not expected to lead a widespread dip in the state’s deer population but can significantly affect localized areas if mortality is severe, according to Chad Fedewa, acting deer specialist with the DNR’s Wildlife Division. Bring Fido: The Genesee County Animal Control Department is offering its final free vaccine clinic for the pets of county residents on Sunday, Oct. 6. |

Southwest Michigan just had a very odd September of weather |
Out of the norm: September was very warm compared to historical averages. It was also very dry, unless you were in the Muskegon area. It was the seventh warmest September on record at Grand Rapids. Lansing, Muskegon and Kalamazoo also crept into the top-10 warmest Septembers at each location. Forecast: It really looks like a pretty nice weekend for enjoying Michigan’s outdoors. We are also in desperate need of rain, and some of that rain will be coming. It's going to be a fairly warm weekend compared to October normals as we experience afternoon temps reaching into the high 60 degrees and low 70s. Saturday night is when a few hour period of showers will move across Lower Michigan and the U.P. In the skies: A very strong solar flare occurred Thursday morning, increasing the chances of northern lights. The solar flare could also cause communications disruptions. |

Dockworkers’ union to suspend strike until Jan. 15 to allow time to negotiate new contract |
On pause: The union representing 45,000 striking U.S. dockworkers at East and Gulf coast ports reached a deal Thursday to suspend a three-day strike until Jan. 15 to provide time to negotiate a new contract. The union went on strike early Tuesday after its contract expired in a dispute over pay and the automation of tasks at 36 ports stretching from Maine to Texas. The union, the International Longshoremen’s Association, is to resume working. In development: GeneseeCounty officials are considering a new $10-million program to incentivize the construction of 500 additional housing units, saying the effort is needed to address high rental rates and the area’s stubborn housing shortage. What do you think? : A proposed $738 million mixed-use development would bring big changes to the riverfront in downtown Grand Rapids. MLive wants your feedback about the project, but first, here’s a little more background on the development. |

5 Chinese University of Michigan students charged in countersurveillance probe |
Next round: Five University of Michigan graduates from China have been charged in a federal countersurveillance probe at the Camp Grayling military facility. A 28-page FBI complaint details how the five students were seen at Camp Grayling, the training facility for the Michigan Army National Guard in northern Michigan. They were found with cameras near military vehicles and classified communications equipment during the Northern Strike training exercise in August 2023. Abandoned: A mother, son and another woman are accused of intentionally killing several dogs and leaving their decomposing bodies at a rental property in Eastpointe. The bodies of six dogs were discovered by the property manager and a cleaning crew after the trio were allegedly evicted from the property on Sept. 30. No hate: After two racist incidents in the area, the leader of South Haven shared a message that hate has no place there. Antisemitic fliers were distributed in and around the city, police said at the end of September. A second incident occurred nearby in Covert Township and involved an anti-Black display, South Haven Mayor Annie Brown said in a letter to media. |
