The No. 8 Spartan capped an outright Big Ten championship with a 79-62 win against the No. 17 Wolverines on Sunday afternoon to close the regular season with a seventh straight victory. Now, the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament bracket is set. For high school, here's a look at the Michigan High School Athletic Association girls basketball pairings and brackets for the 2025 state tournament, from regional semifinals to state finals. The MHSAA continued wrapping up its winter season this weekend with state finals for Division 1, Division 2, Division 3 hockey and gymnastics. |

Michigan settled thousands of refugees – until federal funding got frozen |
More than 32,000 refugees – fleeing conflict and persecution in countries like Iraq, Syria and the Democratic Republic of Congo – have settled in Michigan over roughly the past decade. Numbers recently jumped with Michigan welcoming nearly 3,700 refugees last year alone. But a flurry of recent actions from President Donald Trump threw refugee resettlement in chaos, which left Michigan agencies cut off from federal funding, scrambling to help hundreds of refugees and unsure of what tomorrow holds. Similar situation: Federal funding chaos is putting an already strained support system for people experiencing domestic violence at risk of collapsing, organizational directors told Michigan leaders Friday morning. In environmental news: President Donald Trump hates windmills. He wants America to “drill, baby, drill.” He’s taken aim at Joe Biden-era climate laws that have sent millions to Michigan in the name of fostering clean energy. But what about nuclear power? |

Laid off by Trump’s DOGE? Michigan launches tools to help |
Resource: State officials here are launching new tools to support former federal employees, including workers cut loose by President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Susan Corbin, director of the Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity, said her office continues to work with former federal employees filing for unemployment and searching for a new job. ‘I’m afraid to lose my job': Some of President Donald Trump’s executive orders are spreading fear throughout the University of Michigan, from researchers to campus protesters. The latest: West Michigan news station FOX 17 has announced a round of layoffs as the broadcasting industry works to adapt to changing viewer habits amid declining TV revenue. |

This week will feel really spring-like |
🌸: Most of this week will have temperatures that are significantly warmer than normal for early March. Meteorologist Mark Torregrossa does have a word of warning though about the hopes of spring temperatures. There is a sudden warming about to happen high up in the atmosphere. This warming will affect the Polar Vortex. The Polar Vortex is a fast-spinning circular motion usually located about 50,000 feet in the atmosphere. The swirling vortex, when strong, can actually suck the Arctic cold up into the North Pole region. When the Polar Vortex is disrupted and its circulation weakens, the cold air attached to the Polar Vortex can go on the move. Heard it?: Michigan is transitioning from winter to spring. For proof, listen for the distinctive “conk-la-ree!” song of the red-winged blackbird. |

Kory Woods' 2025 NFL mock draft 2.0: Detroit Lions add versatile edge rusher |
We’re roughly a month and some change away from the 2025 NFL Draft in Green Bay, and last week’s combine provided a bit of clarity — and maybe a shift in plans — for how some teams may approach the board. After returning from Indianapolis, MLive’s Kory Woods made some adjustments to his big board, factoring in standout showings at the combine and roster moves teams are considering ahead of free agency. Making Michigan proud: Portage native Max Gilbert will compete in the Special Olympics Winter Games this week in Turin, Italy. Looking back: Five years ago, when baseball shut down, no one was sure what would happen next. Players scattered across the country, with some training in backyards to keep in shape. The 2020 season eventually returned, but it was far from normal. |

U.P.’s extreme ski resort lands on national list of best places for spring skiing |
National Geographic knows that not all skiers and snowboarders are done for the season, despite warming temperatures and birds singing. Yesterday, the magazine published a list of seven places with “some of the best spring – and summer – skiing” in the country. Mount Bohemia is on that list. Travelers, be aware: A major sewer project is coming to Petoskey State Park this fall, closing the park and its campgrounds. From Wednesday, Sept. 3 through mid-May in 2026 the park will be closed, according to the Department of Natural Resources. In crime: A bill to make trespassing on the Mackinac Bridge a felony crime has advanced in the Michigan Senate. By a unanimous vote, the billto enhance criminal charges for trespassing on the Mighty Macpassed the Senate Civil Rights, Judiciary and Public Safety Committee on Thursday, March 7. It now awaits a vote in the Senate. |
