Michigan’s weekend weather ends with the start of a big warm-up |
Big Ten champs: The Spartans are still streaking and won’t be sharing. No. 8 Michigan State won 91-84 at Iowa on Thursday night for its sixth straight victory to claim an outright Big Ten championship. The Spartans, who clinched at least a share of the title due to Michigan’s loss against Maryland on Wednesday, will host the No. 17 Wolverines (22-8, 14-5) in the regular-season finale on Sunday. Tom Izzo, in his 30th season leading Michigan State, now has 11 Big Ten regular-season titles. That ties him for the record with Bob Knight and Ward “Piggy” Lambert. Batter up: The Detroit Tigers announced its roster Thursday for the 2025 Spring Breakout game, a leaguewide showcase of top prospects. Headlining the Tigers’ squad are top prospects Max Clark and Kevin McGonigle. The game is scheduled for Sunday, March 16, at 4:05 p.m. at CoolToday Park in North Port, Fla., the Braves’ spring training home. Tee time: Golfers from across the U.S. have identified their favorite public courses in Michigan. GolfPass, a digital golf membership that provides tee-time benefits, discounts, course reviews and information and instructional videos, released its 2025 Golfers’ Choice this month. |

Michigan’s weekend weather ends with the start of a big warm-up |
Weekend weather update: It is going to be a rather uneventful weekend of weather with no large, heavy areas of precipitation to worry about. We will start out with winter cold and end the weekend on the doorstep to very spring-like temperatures. There could be brief spurts of snow showers or a rain shower, but nothing that should cause travel problems. Sunday should warm well into the 40s for at least the southern half of Lower Michigan. Snow on the way: The next weather-maker set to head through Michigan won’t actually hit much of Michigan. It will be about a 25-mile wide swath of snow that should be centered somewhere near Michigan’s southern border. A couple of inches of snow should fall in about a six-hour period on Friday afternoon to Friday evening. Warming up: The Sun is gradually climbing higher in the sky each day. Even though we still have more clouds than sun at this time of year, the heating from the Sun is taking hold. |

Michigan tribes losing key federal agency office to Trump cuts |
Tribal leaders say the surprise closure of a federal office which manages Indigenous affairs in Michigan is causing widespread confusion and is likely to cause economic stress for tribal members across the state. The Trump administration is closing the state’s Bureau of Indian Affairs office in Sault Ste. Marie, which helps coordinate everything from commercial fishing licenses to mortgages for all 12 federally recognized tribes in Michigan. President Donald Trump on Thursday postponed 25% tariffs on many imports from Mexico and some imports from Canada for a month amid widespread fears of the economic fallout from a broader trade war. The White House insists its tariffs are about stopping the smuggling of fentanyl, but the taxes proposed by Trump have caused a gaping wound in the decades-old North American trade partnership. Trump’s tariff plans have also caused the stock market to sink and alarmed U.S. consumers. Energy prices: Michiganders will feel President Donald Trump’s trade war with Canada at home and at the pump, state energy regulators say. Flows of natural gas, oil and electricity will likely be impacted by new tariffs the Trump administration imposed on Canada and Mexico on Tuesday, March 4. Dan Scripps, chair of the Michigan Public Service Commission, said in a statement regulators are concerned about effects on both price and reliability, though the full scope of the effects has yet to come into focus. |

Nashville, Chicago rank behind city in Michigan for best street art scene in US |
Getting artsy: You’ll find creative murals all over buildings and in alleyways across Detroit. And the city’s street art scene is getting some big national recognition. Detroit ranks ahead of Nashville and Chicago, coming in at No. 4 for Best Street Art in the U.S. on USA Today’s 10Best List. Ranking in the top three are Jackson, Tennessee, Cincinnati, and Philadelphia. Help wanted: Outdoor recreation options are expanding at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore thanks to some added accessibility equipment. Hikers and bikers with limited mobility or wheelchair users can now use a wheelchair bike, purchased by the nonprofit Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes. Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes is looking for volunteers who can either pilot the bike or ride alongside on their own bike as a guide. A suspension bridge that connects popular hiking trails along the Manistee River is still closed after more than four months of construction. “Little Mac” closed on Nov. 6 and was scheduled to reopen after six weeks, just before Christmas. That didn't happen. U.S. Forest Service officials posted to Facebook on Wednesday alerting hikers that the bridge remains “closed for construction until further notice.” |
