Almost a year after getting engaged, I have finally picked the date and booked a venue. Now, I have over a year to hope for good weather on that specific day. Let's talk a bit closer to now. Our meteorologist has given us an early look at the Memorial Day holiday period. He says every day’s weather will be slightly better than the previous day. Still too far ahead? Well, this week will be cool. The coolness will be produced by rain showers, clouds and a cool northwest wind. If the sky was to clear at night, some could have to worry about frost. |

Michiganders in these 25 cities have the most student loan debt, ranking says |
Millions of former students and college graduates across the U.S. are weighed down with student loan debt, but with exactly how much may depend on where you live. An analysis from WalletHub was released earlier this month, listing high averages student loan debts of residents in more than 2,500 American cities, including 83 in Michigan. The list comes as student loans make national headlines surrounding steps President Donald Trump’s administration has taken to recall federal loans, leaving many to face potential garnishment of their tax refunds, paychecks and other benefits if they default. Here are the 25 communities in Michigan where residents, on average, carry the most student loan debt versus the local median income earned by those with a bachelor’s degree. |

AG Nessel: Jocelyn Benson violated campaign finance law with governor’s race announcement |
Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson violated Michigan’s campaign finance law when she used a state-owned building earlier this year to announce her run for governor, Attorney General Dana Nessel has determined. Benson won’t face any fines or a possible misdemeanor charge, as state law does not provide the attorney general the authority to punish the secretary of state for campaign finance law violations, Nessel’s office said. Under consideration: An abandoned maximum security prison in mid-Michigan would be put up for sale under a proposal from state lawmakers. The Standish Maximum Correctional Facility is a 604-bed prison sitting on roughly 118 acres about 27 miles north of Bay City. The latest: Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has formally requested federal aid to help northern Michigan communities recover and rebuild from crippling ice storms in March. |

Lawsuits against Michigan continue as dam failure victims mark 5-year anniversary |
In May 2020, the Edenville and Sanford Dams failed following heavy rainfall, leading to flooding in Midland and surrounding counties. Five years later, residents affected by the subsequent floods spoke out about their pending legal battles against the state as they seek compensation and justice for their troubles. Several flood victims, plaintiffs in a mass tort lawsuit filed against the state of Michigan, gathered outside a Midland County courthouse Monday morning, May 19, to call attention to their ongoing financial struggles and to criticize the state. |

Could Red Wings capitalize on Leafs’ latest playoff failure? |
The Toronto Maple Leafs have the NHL’s longest active playoff streak at nine seasons. They also have the longest string of postseason misery. The latest disappointment was a 6-1 loss Sunday to the Florida Panthers in Game 7 of the second round. Toronto has failed to advance past the second round under three different coaches and three general managers. The one constant since 2018-19 has been a “Big Four” of elite forwards Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander. They have two playoff series wins to show for it. It could go down as the biggest waste of talent in league history. It could be time to break up the band. Could the Detroit Red Wings capitalize? In baseball: Last night was a dismal night for the Detroit Tigers before the thunderstorms rolled through, and it didn’t get any better after play resumed. The St. Louis Cardinals piled up 16 hits, and the Tigers struck out 11 times in the first seven innings of an 11-4 loss on Monday night at Busch Stadium. |

See Lake Superior from a new vantage point on guided Au Sable Light Station tours |
First-come, first-served: Stepping up 98 stairs, visitors of the Au Sable Light Station get a panoramic view of Lake Superior and the Grand Sable Dunes. Those views, and the educational tour, are free throughout the summer as Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore staff guide daily 30-minute climbs. The free guided climbs begin June 8 and run through Sept. 30. Live music: A free summer concert series with two shows a week is coming to Ludington’s charming new plaza in the middle of its historic downtown. The music series is scheduled for 6-8 p.m. Fridays, May 23-Sept. 26, and Thursdays in June, July and August. Go back in time: The annual Port Oneida Fair in Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, running Aug. 8-9, will showcase a range of settler trades from butter making, to fur trapping to hay baling. |
