ChatGPT + Word + Outlook + PowerPoint?

Hello there friends.

Hope you had a fantastic weekend. So OpenAI's chatbot, ChatGPT, is all the rage now. And now... Microsoft is reportedly bringing it to Office applications too.

Let’s discuss.

What happened?

Here's your quick rundown of what happened:
  • Last week, Microsoft announced that it was adding OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot to its Bing search engine.
  • Now Microsoft is reportedly bringing ChatGPT capabilities to “Word, PowerPoint, Outlook and other apps so customers can automatically generate text using simple prompts.”
  • Improving Outlook search results, suggesting replies to emails, and recommending improvements to writing—these are all things Microsoft has reportedly been experimenting with via OpenAI’s GPT technology.
  • It’s unclear if Microsoft plans to launch these features, or if it’s just experimentation for now.

Why does it matter?

Here's why I think this matters to IT.
  • Two words: data privacy. As VentureBeat points out, how would Microsoft preserve the privacy of corporate data?
  • Another good point: One Forrester analyst said there are “a lot of open questions about what guardrails and controls enterprises put both on how these tools are allowed to be adopted, and how they can be used once they are adopted.”
