Bylong Valley coal project rejected by panel | |
A multi-million dollar coal project west of the Upper Hunter has been rejected by an independent planning panel on environmental and heritage grounds. The South Korean company behind the project claimed it would bring $300 million into the state's economy over 25 years. But the NSW Independent Planning Panel found the 120 million tonnes of potential coal was "not in the public interest". | |

'Midget tossing' cancelled after social media backlash | |
The Great Northern Hotel has cancelled and apologised for a 'midget tossing' event planned for Newcastle later this month. A Wolf of Watt Street night, themed after a scene from the Hollywood film Wolf of Wall Street, had been planned for September 21. But the hotel's management backflipped after a backlash on social media, and condemnation from the NSW Disability Services Minister and Short Statured People of Australia. | |

Hunter cliff diver wins fourth consecutive world title | |
Lake Macquarie's Rhiannon Iffland has topped off another perfect cliff diving season, winning the final world series event this week in Spain. The 28-year-old, who only entered the sport in 2015, has now won four consecutive world titles. | |

Stockton residents have started a crowdfunding campaign to fight "State Government inaction" over coastal erosion. Ongoing erosion issues at Stockton have resulted in the closure of a childcare centre and the closure of public access to the beach. | |
