Media Winners & Losers

MEDIA WINNER:
MSNBC's Steve Kornacki

It was Steve Kornacki's time to shine on Tuesday.

The famed data journalist was stationed at MSNBC's election night "Big Board" throughout the day, delivering insightful analyses on each key race.

Kornacki's coverage, which he brought to viewers in his now iconic Gap khakis, has not only led to iconic nicknames like "Map Daddy," but also helped MSNBC beat CNN in total viewers for the first election ever.

In the prime time hours of 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Tuesday, MSNBC beat out CNN in total viewers with 3.1 million and 747,000 in the demo, while CNN drew 2.47 million total viewers but beat MSNBC in the demo with 983,000.

Kornacki's coverage also started before Tuesday with a special live hour of The Kornacki Countdown, which last week showed the journalist dissecting the polling in critical races with the U.S. Capitol as his background.

Kornacki has proved himself a crucial election night icon. He stayed up all night crunching the numbers and giving viewers a nonbiased rundown of each race. He also proved his understanding of our current political climate on the latest episode of Mediaite's The Interview.

"And one of the possible outcomes, in fact, is that there is no answer," he said of who would take Senate control Tuesday. "And we go to a runoff in Georgia in December and that runoff decides Senate control. That’s not impossible at all."

The solid prediction again proves his knack for election coverage, especially as the Georgia Senate race will head to a run-off while the Senate remains 50/50.

MEDIA LOSER:
Joe Rogan

Joe Rogan might want to think twice about making bold election predictions.

During a late October episode of The Joe Rogan Experience, the host confidently predicted the 2022 midterm elections would result in a red wave.

“I think the red wave that’s coming, it'll be like the elevator doors opening up in The Shining,” Rogan said to writer Bridget Phetasy, referencing the scene where a river of blood rushes out of the hotel elevators.

“That’s what I think. I think people are just like, ‘What the fuck are you saying?’ They’re making Republicans.”

Rogan suggested when it comes to more divisive topics, “there are a lot of people that are afraid of talking about it. But they’re not afraid of voting about it."

"Because there’s a lot of people that are afraid of the reprisal,"  he added.

"They’re afraid of getting attacked and they’ll silently, when they’re amongst friends going, ‘What the fuck is going on? Like, what is going on?’ And those people — that’s gonna be responsible for the red wave,"

Well, the red wave never actually happened.

Republicans are only poised to seize a narrow majority of seats in the House of Representatives, while the parties are currently neck and neck in the Senate race with Democrats seeming increasingly likely to retain their hold.

Perhaps refrain from making such sweeping predictions, Rogan, as the elections were more like a pink trickle.
