Aug. 26, 2020 Active weather brings a risk for strong storms. Tonight, lows will be in the high 50s in the north to the high 60s in the south. The National Weather Service said scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop along a weak boundary across central Minnesota through this evening. Any storm that does develop will have the potential for large hail and damaging wind gusts, with the best chance north of a line from Montevideo to the Twin Cities to Bloomer, Wis. Mayor Jacob Frey and Police Chief Medaria Arradondo said the changes are part of a policy overhaul designed to improve trust after the killing of George Floyd in May, in addition to previous incidents over the years.
Minnesota recorded 14 deaths due to the coronavirus, the highest death toll in a week. The deaths included two people from Hennepin County in their 30s, a relative rarity for the pandemic. According to the Minnesota Department of Health data, 1.22 percent of fatalities have been under age 40. A department spokesperson said neither of the people listed among today’s deaths appeared to have underlying health problems. As schools opt-out of bringing kids back into the classroom, more families are opting for in-person learning anyway. Families across the state are creating cooperative learning pods to care for and teach kids. The North United Methodist Church in Minneapolis is actually setting up a program for families in north Minneapolis to help working parents.
