Given the strong appreciation of the Swiss franc, the profit margins are declining in export oriented companies of the mechanical and electrical engineering industries (MEM). The question is whether the companies can still be sufficiently innovative under these conditions to bolster their international competitiveness. A study tried to address this question and found that, above all, a clear and long-term innovation strategy and establishing cooperation is important in order to be highly innovative.
