Dear Mr. Do, no all-clear signal The Swiss Franc could exert its strength since the release of the minimum value of the Euro, but this factor has caused considerable distress to the Swiss MEM industry. According to the statistics of the industrial sector association Swissmem, the situation seems to be relaxing somewhat now: not because of the weakening of the Franc, but because the steps taken by the companies are beginning to take effect. Nevertheless, the structural change is still in process and the situation continues to be unsatisfactory from the perspective of the profit margin, which is why a clear 50% of the industrial units are planning to relocate to other countries within the next three years. The companies are forced to cut flab in order to remain fit for the future, irrespective of the consequences for the employment situation in Switzerland. Susanne Reinshagen Editor, SMM
