Minnesota reports the highest COVID-19 death count in months today. The latest data includes 29 newly reported deaths, more than twice the recent daily average, although six of them are from earlier in the pandemic. Health officials say they don’t think the spike is a matter of data reporting, but reflects a jump in the daily death toll to its highest point since June. The highest daily toll came at the end of May, at 35 people. The state posted more than 1,200 newly confirmed cases, the first time new cases have topped 1,000 for a week straight. Today’s jump in Minnesota follows similar spikes in neighboring states. Wisconsin reported 34 deaths yesterday. North Dakota set a new record for daily deaths last week, at 24. Minnesota's COVID-19 data now includes rapid testing results, too. The state is expanding its reporting, saying it will make public new data on antigen testing, which are typically less-reliable point-of-care or rapid tests.
