Major U.S. companies have been cutting their workforce in the past month, according to recent news reports, including Amazon, PepsiCo and Meta. The cannabis industry has also seen its fair share of layoffs, most recently with Trulieve reducing staff in Pennsylvania and the company’s home state of Florida, where a class action lawsuit is currently unfolding over how layoffs played out in Gadsden County. Trulieve officials did not announce how many workers they laid off in those two states, but the staff reductions come after fellow MSO Curaleaf laid off 220 workers last month and after Canada-based Canopy Growth Corp. announced in April that it planned to lay off roughly 250 workers as part of cost-cutting initiatives. Ancillary businesses have also been affected, including cannabis hiring platform Vangst and tech firm Weedmaps, which reportedly cut up to 25% of its employees. On the other side of the coin, American workers are more interested than ever in moving among different industries, and the cannabis space is well positioned to attract unique talents.
