In downtown Tecumseh, ice and artistry collide this weekend for the 15th Annual Ice Sculpture Festival. Head to Grand Rapids to catch the Taylor Swift experience, Disney’s “Aladdin” by Broadway GR or another World of Winter event. Warm up at a chili competition or jam to live music in Muskegon. |

After fall of Roe, 1 in 4 Michigan adults say they don’t want kids |
Since the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022, roughly one in four Michigan adults say they’re uninterested in having children, according to new research out from Michigan State University this month. The research also found a Michigan adult is 33% more likely to consider themselves childfree – a term ascribed to adults who do not have and do not want children – since the U.S. Supreme Court decision nearly two years ago. In public interest: Henry Ford Health is suing the federal government over a work visa policy that it says changed without warning, resulting in an employee being turned away at the Detroit-Windsor border. |

Kalamazoo County couple gives $100M to college, largest gift ever to an HBCU |
Charitable: William Johnston and Ronda Stryker, chair and vice chair of Greenleaf Trust respectively, are giving a historic $100 million to Spelman College, located in Atlanta, Georgia. The donation is the largest gift in history to a historically Black college and university, according to a press release from the college. New grant: The Michigan State Housing Development Authority announced Thursday, Jan. 18 that a new $3 million grant program will help Michigan tribes build new housing and upgrade existing homes. Addressing gaps: A grant from JPMorgan Chase will help Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) entrepreneurs in Kalamazoo by addressing disproportionate barriers BIPOC entrepreneurs face when starting and growing businesses. |

Michigan weekend weather: Transition from deep-freeze to big meltdown |
Melting away: More snowfall is coming Saturday but will mostly be confined to the Lake Michigan shoreline and parts of the Upper Peninsula. Next week's robust warming pattern will quickly set in and is expected to help melt the snow. In Frankenmuth: The recent snowstorm and frigid temperatures that have swept across Michigan means conditions are just right for Zehnder’s Snowfest preparations. The snow and ice festival that brings crowds of roughly 100,000 people to “Little Bavaria” kicks off Wednesday, Jan. 24, and continues through Sunday, Jan. 28, Be careful: Authorities in Ionia County asked motorists to avoid its back roads as snowplows work around vehicles stuck in deep snow drifts. |

What are the Detroit Lions’ Super Bowl chances? |
Getting closer: The only thing standing between the Lions and a play-in game for the Super Bowl is are the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. If they beat the Bucs, the Lions will face either the San Francisco 49s or Green Bay Packers in the NFC championship game. Detroit has the fifth-best odds to win the Super Bowl according to all the major online sportsbooks. New additions: The Detroit Tigers announced the signing of 17 international prospects this week, including two rated highly in national rankings.
Not happening: Thin ice conditions on Houghton Lake prompted Tip-Up Town 2024 organizers to cancel the first weekend’s ice fishing contests and side-by-side races.

Icy: Last weekend's major winter storm turned the St. Joseph shoreline into a winter wonderland. Limited time: Grand Haven waterfront favorite Pronto Pup is now open until Sunday, Jan. 21, for this year’s Winter Weekend Fix event — the only time outside of warmer days when the food stand is open for business. Helping hand: A state police motor carrier officer rescued a man who had fallen through the ice on Arbutus Lake in Grand Traverse County’s East Bay Township with the help of the man's dog. |
